Hi,
At the last group session when solving the 2013 final exam, I wrongly sketched a michelson interferometer instead of a michelson stellar interferometer - which are two different instruments. If this lead to confusion at the exam last friday, this will not count count against your final score. I very much apologize for any possible confusion!
Also, I hope the exam went well otherwise!
Cheers,
Ainar
Hi,
I have uploaded the slides on polarimetry that I showed during the lecture and that some of you found useful. As always, you can find them under "Materials".
Cheers,
Pia
Dear all,
please note that due to the already ongoing final exams this week, there won't be any more lectures for the AST2210 course. However, we will offer two more exercise classes on Thursday, 3.12 and Thursday, 10.12 at 14:15. Please let us know, if you have any special requests.

Hi everyone,
you can find the curriculum of this year's course under "Materials". The curriculum gives a summary of the important concepts and topics that were covered during the lectures AFTER the midterm exam. The final exam will be based on chapters 5, and 7-11, as well as on the chapters that were relevant for the midterm exam (i.e., chapter 1-3, and 6). This means that chapter 4 and chapter 12 will not be part of the final exam!
Please note: I tried to implement the suggestions/feedback I got from you after the midterm exam. Instead of strictly following the lecture notes, additional material from the two recommended curriculum books (Kitchin and Chromey) was included in the lectures. However, for the final exam, all the relevant material is found in the lecture notes.
Best,
Pia
Hi everyone!
The semester is nearing its end and it's therefore time for the final course evaluation - which can be found here. The evaluation is administered by the Astrofysisk FagUtvalg (AFU) and it would be great if you took the time to fill it out and deliver it to AFU's mailbox in the 1st floor of the Institute!
Cheers, Ainar
Hi everyone!
Since the last rounds of lab sessions this week got to be somewhat late in the semester, and an appropriate length of time to complete the reports would have put the delivery deadline too close to the exam, it has been decided that you will not have to write a report on the Aberrations lab. This will hopefully also make your various exam preparations less stressful.
Note: Attending and completing the lab itself as normal is still mandatory for those that have not yet done so!
Cheers, Ainar
Dear all,
the midterm results have been published. You can find them on the StudentWeb.
Dear all,
as announced during the lectures last week, we will offer special exercise classes in preparation for the final exam. These will take place on the following dates:
Thursday, 26.11, 14:15
Thursday, 3.12, 14:15
Thursday, 10.12, 14:15
Please remember to have a look at the exercises at the end of each chapter in the lecture notes and try to solve them on your own before we start with the exercise classes.
Hi,
As indicated at the last labs, the next and last lab will be held the coming week (week 47). Times and groups are the same as the original ones. Again, if this is problematic, send me a mail and we'll shuffle things around. The lab is about optical aberrations - read the text here.
On an unrelated note - hopefully you've noticed that I've sent out the corrected Hinode lab reports. Please make sure to check the comments I've given to incorporate for the next report. Let me know if the annotated pdfs give you any trouble.
Cheers, Ainar
Hi everyone,
As mentioned at the lab itself, the lab-report deadline for the Diffraction lab was going to be set two weeks after the lab-week - meaning the deadline is set to the 23.11.15.
Cheers,
Ainar
Hi everyone!
After a couple of emails and going through the lab text again I have some remarks and pointers with regards to the CCD-Lab, as detailed here. I put these in a pdf since they got quite long for a simple message, but I wanted to convey some detail to avoid confusion - let me know if I managed to confuse you anyway!
Please read them, as they may clarify some questions you may have.
Update 09.11: A comment on whether or not to use central region in computations has been added, as well as tips on finding indices for min/max values in matrices.
Cheers,
Ainar
On Wednesday, October 28th, 2015, the Director General of the European Southern Observatory (ESO, http://www.eso.org/public/) will visit Oslo to discuss a Norwegian ESO membership. He will give a talk which will most likely be scheduled during our lecture.
I strongly recommend to attend the talk because an ESO membership would open new possibilities for observational astronomy in Norway and thus for you as potential future astronomers.
The tentative schedule for Wednesday:
10:15-10:55 AST2210 lecture
11:00-11:30 Talk by the ESO Director General
I will update this information as soon as the time for the talk is confirmed.
Sven
Please download and fill out (if you haven't done so already) the MID-TERMcourse evaluation form
/studier/emner/matnat/astro/AST2210/h15/beskjeder/midtveiseval_ast2210.pdf
You can either give me the filled forms during the lecture on Monday (October 26th, 2015) or put them into the AFU mailbox.
Thanks,
Sven
Hi,
Just a quick message that there will not be any group session this Thursday (15.10). For further sessions and upcoming labs, stay tuned for messages.
Cheers, Ainar.
Hello Everyone! Just a reminder that the deadline for the Hinode Lab-Report is the 18.10 (the latest is Monday morning the 19.10 in my inbox). Remember to read the lab report guidelines! Especially note the naming conventions for the report, for when you hand it in. Otherwise, don't hesitate to ask if there are any questions regarding the report.
Further, I hope your exam went well!
Greetings from La Palma,
Ainar.
Dear all,
you are allowed to bring the following items to the midterm exam:
Tillatte hjelpemidler: lommekalkulator, matematisk formelsamling, ?grim & Lian: St?rrelser og enheter i fysikk og teknikk

Pia
Dear all,
as a reminder, the midterm exam will cover chapters 1, 2, 3 and 6 of the lecture notes. Also, if you have not followed the course so far, but have done so before and handed in the obligatory lab exercise reports, please let me know.
Good luck to all of you!
Pia
Hi,
The problem text and files for the IDL exercises can be found here.
To download the files while connected to a linux machine at the institute, run this command in your working directory:
wget address-of-file
To unpack the .tar file run:
tar -xvf file.tar
Update: to get access to fzread, after setting everything up as normal, but *before* running the sswidl command, run the following in the terminal:
setenv IDL_DLM_PATH "/astro/local/rsi/idl64/bin/bin.linux.x86_64/:+/mn/xsan/u1/rouppe/idl/ana-linux/"
Cheers,
Ainar
Please remember to prepare a short (5-10 min) presentation on one of the telescopes on La Palma (see http://www.iac.es/eno.php?op1=2&op2=3&lang=en for an overview of the observatory). The presentations will take place on Thursday (24.9). You can do them in pairs or groups of three. Ideally, each group should present a different telescope. The following points should be considered
- give as much information as possible
- show pictures taken by that telescope
- find out what have been the main achievements of that telescope
