MBV4130 – The biology of the prokaryotes

Course content

The course will provide students with an advanced understanding of the biology of the prokaryotes Bacteria and Archaea, with emphasis on cell structure, physiology, classification and molecular biology. The course will also concentrate on chosen, relevant topics where the molecular mechanisms are known, such as the role of symbiotic interactions in medicine and agriculture.

Learning outcome

The course provides students with knowledge and indepth understanding of the great diversity of prokaryotic organisms with regard to metabolism. The course will emphasize molecular mechanisms and the methods used to obtain this information. The students will give independent seminars on relevant themes.

Teaching

The course lasts five weeks in the end of the autumn semester and the teaching will consist of 20 hours of lectures, 8 hours of seminars including student presentations and practical computer assignments.

Examination

The presentation from the seminars and the practical assignment (20%)must be approved before the final oral exam (80%).

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
