MBV3060 – General microbiology

Course content
The course will introduce the students to the biology of microorganisms with emphasis on prokaryotes. It covers structure, metabolism, genetics, growth and ecology of bacteria. The laboratory exercises give training in basic methods such as sterile techniques and enrichment cultures. In addition various experiments which illustrate the molecular biology, biochemistry and physiology of bacteria are performed.
Learning outcome
After finishing this course, the students will have knowledge and understanding of the diversity of prokaryotes with regard to their energy metabolism, biochemistry and physiology and also of classification and evolution of prokaryotes and their role in the ecosystem.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2
And in addition one of these:
- Physics (1+2)
- Chemistry (1+2)
- Biology (1+2)
- Information technology (1+2)
- Geosciences (1+2)
- Technology and theories of research (1+2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).
MBV1010 – Cell biology and genetics (discontinued), MBV1030 – General biochemistry (discontinued), MBV2010 – Molecular biology (continued) and MBV2020 – Laboratory course (discontinued) or corresponding.
Following courses must also be taken in the same semester or earlier than MBV3060:
For students attending MBV3060 autumn 2014 or later, applies that MBV3060 can't be included in a degree before HMS0503 is passed.
Teaching
Lectures (32 h), group discussions (16 h), laboratory exercises (32 h) and an independent project. Group discussions laboratory exercises and independent projects are compulsory. The laboraotory reports, independent projects and participation in group discussions must be approved in order for the students to be eligilbe for the exam.
As the teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance. Read about your insurance cover as a student.
Examination
The laboratory reports, independent projects and participation in group discussions must be approved in order for the students to be eligilbe for the final written exam, 3 hours. Allowed examination aids: None. Letter grades (A-F).
