MBV1010 – Cell biology and genetics

Course content
Introductory course in genetics, molecular and cellular biology. Subjects include cell biology, microbiology, classic and molecular genetics, biotechnology and evolutionary biology.
Learning outcome
The course will provide an understanding of:
- How eukaryote and prokaryote cells are constructed
- How cells divide and communicate
- How genetic traits are transferred from parents to offspring
- How DNA and chromosomes are constructed, what genes are, how gene products are produced, and how gene expression is regulated
- Genetic model organisms and the genetic basis for evolutionary biology
- DNA technology

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2
And in addition one of these:
- Physics (1+2)
- Chemistry (1+2)
- Biology (1+2)
- Information technology (1+2)
- Geosciences (1+2)
- Technology and theories of research (1+2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).
Following courses must be taken in the same semester or earlier than MBV1010:
For students attending MBV1010 spring 2013 or later, applies that MBV1010 can't be included in a degree before HMS0503 and HMS0505 are passed.
Recommended previous knowledge
BIO1000 – Elementary Biology (discontinued), KJM1000 – Introduction to chemistry (discontinued)
Teaching
The course includes 30 lectures, 30 hours colloquia and 20 hours laboratory work. Laboratory work and colloquia are compulsory. The laboratory reports and participation at colloquia must be approved in order for the students to be eligilbe for the final exam.
As the teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance. Read about your insurance cover as a student.
Examination
Final written exam, 3 hours, in June. Allowed examination aids: None. Letter grades (A-F).
This subject offer new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
