Course content
Biological sequence databases. Parwise and multiple sequence alignments, analysis of genomic DNA sequences, protein modeling, Gene Ontology, RNA sequencing, Introduction to programming.
Learning outcome
An understanding of how a comparison of biological sequences can give information on the function and evolution of the sequences. How algorithms for optimal pairwise sequence alignments and for database searches work. A knowledge of tools for homology-based modeling of three-dimensional protein structures. RNA sequencing: Principle and analysis of the results. Knowledge about the use of simple programming to construct and modify computer programs for bioinformatical analyses.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2
And in addition one of these:
- Physics (1+2)
- Chemistry (1+2)
- Biology (1+2)
- Information technology (1+2)
- Geosciences (1+2)
- Technology and theories of research (1+2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).
MBV1030 – General biochemistry (discontinued) or corresponding. MBV2010 – Molecular biology (continued) or corresponding (from 2008).
Recommended previous knowledge
MAT1000 – Mathematics for applications I (discontinued). MBV2010 – Molecular biology (continued) (prerequisite from 2008).
Overlapping courses
8 credits overlap with BIOS3010 – Bioinformatics
Teaching
Lectures (34 hours), work in PC-lab (about 60 hours).
Examination
Written exam, 3 hours, in June. Allowed examination aids: None. Letter grading.
This subject offer new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination. More information about new examination can be found on the faculty's site.
