BIO2020 – Biological methods
Course description
Course content
The course will provide essential knowledge, and give experience of multiple techniques that can be applied to a possible master project, or as a working biologist. The methods taught will include growing of organisms and cells, microscopy, sampling, separation-techniques, biochemistry, cellular biological and molecular biological methods, in addition to bioinformatics.
Learning outcome
After completion of the course, you will be able to:
- Use a microscope to study cells
- Good laboratory routines
- Use molecular methods and techniques
- Interpret laboratory-results
Admission
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2
And in addition one of these:
- Physics (1+2)
- Chemistry (1+2)
- Biology (1+2)
- Information technology (1+2)
- Geosciences (1+2)
- Technology and theories of research (1+2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).
Following courses must also be taken in the same semester or earlier than MBV2020:
- MBV2010 - Molecular biology
- HMS0503 - Laboratory Safety or MNHMS0010LS - Innf?ring i laboratoriesikkerhet (nedlagt) or MNHMS0020LS - In-depth Laboratory Safety (nedlagt)
For students attending BIO2020 spring 2014 or later, applies that MBV2020 can't be included in a degree before HMS0503 is passed.

10 credits overlap with BIO2140 – Molecular biology and Biological Methods (discontinued)
Teaching
Mandatory laboratory work and colloquium. Laboratory has mandatory submission of laboratory rapports.
To be able to participate in laboratory courses it is a prerequisite that the following courses have been completed:
You must bring documentation that these courses have been passed when you register for the first obligatory BIO2020 laboratory course.
As the teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance. Read about your insurance cover as a student.
Examination
Mandatory lab-rapports must be approved before you can be accepted to take the final exam.
1. Written final exam in June counts 100% to the course grade.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
