MNHMS0020LS – In-depth Laboratory Safety
Course description
Course content
It is an objective to ensure that laboratory teaching work takes place in safe surroundings. You will receive information on what HSE requirements are placed upon you as a laboratory student at the University of Oslo. A practical experiment will be shown with focus on handelling potential risks in the laboratory.
Learning outcome
After completing the course you should have the following knowledge:
- Important laws and safety regulations connected to laboratory work.
- Planning of a laboratory experiment with use of: laboratory journal, material safety data sheets, risk assessment, electrical instruments and safety, fume cupboards and protective installations, and correct use of personal protective equipment.
- Safe handelling of chemicals and biological substances.
- Toxicological challenges connected with the use of chemical and biological substances based on material safety data sheets.
Admission
MNHMS0020LS is compulsory for:
New students at the Masters programs:
- Biology (Master's two years)
- Farmasi (2. avdeling)
- Geosciences (Master's two years), field of study:
- Environmental Geology and Geohazards
- Geology
- Petroleum geology and Petroleum geophysics
- Chemistry (Master's two years)
- Materials Science and Nanotechnology (Master's two years)
- Molecular Biosciences (Master's two years)
The course is a mandatory prerequisite for introduction courses for master's studies and a recommended prerequisite for all courses which include work in laboratories with biological or chemical substances at both master's and PhD level.
