Course content
The course will provide students with competence regarding the use of drugs in the field of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and renal failure. In addition, the course will give the students general competence in pharmacokinetics. The course also contains veterinary pharmacology.
Learning outcome
After completing the course:
- You can describe pathogenesis, etiology and symptomatology of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and renal failure.
- You will have broad knowledge about the principles of the current drug therapy and can evaluate drug therapy of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and renal failure in relation to non-pharmacological treatment.
- You will have broad knowledge about the pharmacokinetic processes absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination and can calculate key pharmacokinetic parameters.
- You can identify problems related to simultaneous use of multiple drugs (polypharmacy), i.e. drug-drug interactions, and evaluate what information is important in different situations.
- You have knowledge about laboratory values that are used in the various therapeutics areas and can identify side effects of drugs eg. based on symptoms and laboratory values.
- You can provide information about various drugs and correct use of these to other healthcare professionals and patients.
- You have knowledge about veterinary pharmacotherapy.

The course is only available to students enrolled at the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Oslo.

- The compulsory HSE-courses HMS0501 – Safety and Physical Environment, HMS0502 – Positive Learning Environment, HMS0503 – Laboratory Safety, HMS0506 – Patient Clinic Safety and HMS0507 – Fire Safety required for students at the 5-year Master`s Programme in Pharmacy.
Course exemption:?Laws and regulations describing the overall learning outcome regulate the Pharmacy Programme. Exemptions are only granted if all learning outcomes in the course are covered.

Teaching
Lectures and elements involving student-active teaching methods, including problem-based learning (PBL) (compulsory); seminars (incl. flipped classroom); laboratory course (compulsory) and patient demonstrations.
- 30 hours lectures
- 15 hours PBL (5 PBL tasks) - compulsory
- 28 hours seminar
- 2 hours patient demonstration
- 2 laboratory courses (each 3 hours) with submission of 1 laboratory report - compulsory
Compulsory participation and submissions in the course must be completed and approved before the exam. Approved PBL activities implies that the student has participated actively within the PBL group. The main purpose of PBL is to increase the student?s ability to communicate information about drug use to patients and to other health professionals.

Access to teaching:?A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Upon completion and approval of laboratory exercises and PBL teaching, this is valid for 3 years.
Examination
Final oral exam with 1 hour preparation time and 30?minutes exam. Oral exam counts 100 %.?
For admission to the exam the following must be approved:
- Approved participation in PBL teaching.
- Approved laboratory courses.
Withdrawal from an examination:?It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: FARM2290 – OE i fysiologi, farmakoterapi og lovkunnskap (discontinued).

Language of examination
The examination text is given in Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.
