Course content
The course provides an introduction to the structure and function of cells, tissues and some of the body?s organ systems (skin, peripheral nervous system, skeleton, muscles and endocrine system). Cell biology, anatomy and physiology constitute the basis for understanding the pathophysiology and mechanisms of drug actions within the aforementioned organ systems. The course covers key principles for interactions between endogenous mediators or drugs and their target molecules (eg. receptors, enzymes) and signaling pathways responsible for the effects (pharmacodynamics).
Learning outcome
After completing the course, you can
- give an account of the structure of cells and describe how cells communicate and interact with the surroundings in the body.
- apply knowledge concerning cells and cell division to explain how cancer cells can develop, spread and be treated by classical cytostatic drugs.
- explain how the human body is composed and how some of the organ systems (skin, peripheral nervous system, skeleton, muscles and the endocrine system, excluding sex hormones) works.
- account for the molecular mechanisms of drug actions related to the aforementioned organ systems, including target molecules and signaling pathways.
- explain the relationship between physiology, pathophysiology, and drug interactions with the target molecules in selected therapeutic areas (skin diseases, glaucoma, thyroid diseases), as well as appraise drug treatment of these diseases.
- communicate information about molecular and cellular mechanisms in an understandable manner.
- describe simple test systems and perform simple laboratory trials under supervision to investigate cells/tissues and drug effects.
- calculate concentrations and apply different denominations.
- evaluate results from simple experiments and understand the relationship between drug concentrations, effects, and side effects.
Admission to the course
The course is only available to students enrolled at the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Oslo.
Formal prerequisite knowledge
The admission requirements for the 5-year Master?s Programme in Pharmacy.
Health, safety and the environment (HSE):?There are compulsory HSE courses at the beginning of the first semester. For students who start at the 5-year Master?s Programme in Pharmacy, the following HSE courses are required HMS0501 – Safety and Physical Environment, HMS0502 – Positive Learning Environment, HMS0503 – Laboratory Safety, HMS0506 – Patient Clinic Safety and HMS0507 – Fire Safety.
If you fail to pass the HSE-courses within the set deadlines you will not be allowed to continue the study programme until the courses are passed, i.e. the following year at the earliest.
Course exemption:?Laws and regulations describing the overall learning outcome regulate the Pharmacy programme.?Exemptions are only granted if all learning outcomes in the course are covered.

Teaching
Lectures and student activating teaching, including flipped classroom, seminars, student-active colloquiums, and laboratory exercises.
- 2 hours lectures per week
- 5 - 7 hours student-active teaching per week. This includes:
- Laboratory lectures and exercises with submission of 2 individual laboratory reports - compulsory.
- Student-active colloquia - 50 % compulsory attendance
- Student-active seminars - of which 4 seminars are mandatory (drug calculations and treatment of skin diseases, glaucoma and thyroid diseases)
In order to participate in laboratory exercises, it is a requirement that the HSE subject HMS0503 – Laboratory Safety must be passed.

Access to teaching:?A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Compulsory instruction and coursework are valid for 3 years.
Examination
Final written exam which counts 100?% towards the final?grade.?
For admission to the exam the following must be approved:
- Host presence at 4 seminars in drug calculations and treatment of skin diseases, glaucoma and thyroid diseases.
- Host presence at 2 laboratory lectures and conduction of two?laboratory exercises.
- Two laboratory reports (Lab1 and 2).
- 50 % attendance in the colloquia.

Language of examination
The examination text is given in Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
