Programme structure 2017

The master programme is a two year programme, consisting of a thesis and theoretical course work. The thesis is an independent scientific work, carried out under supervision.

You write a long thesis (60 credits thesis, 60 credits course work).

All 4000- and 5000-courses are considered master level courses. Choice of thesis and curriculum is made in collaboration with your supervisor and in accordance with your choice of research area. At least 30 credits must be from the program structure.

The programme is connected to two research groups:

The program offers five areas of spesialization focusing on different topics of Design, Use, Interaction:

  • Systems development in a use context (Design)
  • Large and complex information systems (Information Systems)
  • IT-management (Information Systems)
  • Interaction design (Design)
  • Digital Media Production (Design)

It is also possible to combine areas of specialization.

Note that some of specialized courses require that you have particular bachelor courses as a prerequisite (see below).

The research groups incorporate informatics with other disciplines such as humanities, social sciences, education and law and you can include courses from all of these areas in you master study.

Choice of thesis and theoretical curriculum is made in collaboration with your supervisor. This choice also determines the specialization of the study.

All specializations includes one method course in addition to the courses listed below: some are mandatory and some are recommended. All students can also include other courses in their study: all courses (except those with requirements) are open to all students.

For students with a bachelor in Technology, organization and learning (TOOL)

Students who have completed a bachelor's degree in Technology, Organization and Learning can construct their master's degree as they would with the earlier master's programme in Technology, Organization and Learning.


Recommended curriculum
The specialization "Systems development in a user context" within Informatics: design, use, interaction is suitable for this area (eg. you can for instance analyze a phenomenon within the field of technology, organization and learning.) It is also possible to include some courses from Institute for Educational Research or from Department of Sociology and Human Geography.

If you are admitted to the Masters Programme and you have completed Master courses outside the University of Oslo, you may apply to have these courses recognised as part of your degree. Please contact the Department of Informatics for more information.
