First time setup of Educloud Research

You need to be able to log in with ID-porten to follow the steps below. If you do not have ID-porten, please contact your project administrator.

Step 1a: Register a new project (for administrators)

Before you can use Educloud, you have to set up (or join) a project.

Currently, it is only possible for people with Norwegian electronic ID to apply for a project.

  1. Go to: https://nettskjema.no/a/341541
  2. Log in via ID-porten
  3. Fill out the form
    • Note: Please make sure to fill in you work-related email address, not a personal one
    • The form is only available in Norwegian. Please contact support for further help.
    • The form is signed via Posten Signering upon completion. Note that signing is a requirement.
    • We evaluate your application and create a project. When everything is ready, you will receive a welcome email with information on how to get started.

Note: All Educloud projects gain access to the high-performance computing cluster Fox automatically. For those who only want access to Fox, and no other Educloud services, it is possible to apply for membership in the project ec12. This option is mainly directed at UiO users, but users outside of UiO can also apply to ec12 should they want to test Fox before getting their own project.

Step 1b: Apply for membership in a project (for everyone else)

The following steps only apply for people who want to join an already created project.

You must register for a specific project in order to gain access to Educloud resources (see the guided steps below). UiO user who only want access to Fox, the general-purpose HPC cluster, can apply for access to the Fox test project ec12

If you do not have ID-porten

To add international users who do not have Norwegian e-ID, the process requires the project admin to schedule a video or phone call with the new project member. The procedure is the same for persons who already have an Educloud user account from a previous project.

  1. The project admin requests a invitation link being sent to the foreign user: Educloud Self Service. The link requires a secret string, and will expire after 3 hours.
  2. The project admin gives the secret string to the new project member via video or phone call with them.
  3. The new project member follows the link, and either creates a new user account (generating login credentials by setting a password and scanning a QR code with an authenticator app on their portable smart device), or reuses their existing Educloud user account if they already have one.
  4. The project admin gives access to Windows machines after the new user is created.

For existing Educloud users, it's important that the details entered by the project administrator who invites the new project member matches what they are already registered with.

For questions regarding user registration, please email ec-contact@usit-uio.no

If you have ID-porten

  1. Go to selfservice.educloud.no
  2. Click on Apply for project membership
Bildet kan inneholde: font, rektangel, teknologi, skjermdump, tall.

  4. Add the project you want to apply for access to under Project code, and you name and email. And confirm your national ID.
  5. Click Submit application.

When you have submitted the application, an administrator for the project will need to approve your application before you get access to the project. It is the admin for the relevant project and not Educloud who accepts the application. If you need your application accepted contact the project relevant admins.

Step 2: Change your password

  1. Go to selfservice.educloud.no.
  2. Choose Change your password.
  3. Sign in with your Educloud credentials or ID-porten.
  4. Choose a new password that meets the specified requirements for password strength, and repeat the new password.
  5. Click on Set new password.

If you don't remember your Educloud credentials and are not able to log in through ID-porten, please contact your project administrator in order to regain access to your account.

Step 3: Setup two-factor authentication

You need to set up two-factor authentication in Educloud before you can log in.

First you need an authenticator app on your mobile device, for generating one-time codes. There are many such apps, but we recommend using Microsoft Authenticator.

In order to get two-step authentication for logging in to Educloud, you need to set up a one-time code for your account. This is done by scanning a QR code that you get through selfservice.educloud.no.

  1. Go to selfservice.educloud.no via PC or tablet
  2. Choose Change your OTP.
Bildet kan inneholde: produkt, font, skjermdump, tall, rektangel.
  3. Sign in with your Educloud credentials or ID-porten.
  4. You will be sent to a page with a QR code.
  5. Open Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device
    • If you have not done this before, select Get started
    • If you have already used this authenticator app, click on the plus icon to add a new connection/two-factor code.
  6. Choose Other (Google, Facebook etc.). The camera on your phone should now open.
  7. Scan the QR-code shown on your PC/tablet.
    • The two-factor code for Educloud will be added to the bottom of the list in your authenticator app (not necessarily with that exact name).
    • The authenticator app will generate one-time codes every 30 seconds.
  8. Confirm the code in the field at the bottom of the page with the 6 digit code from the authenticator app.

Step 4: Log in to Educloud with VMWare Horizon

Note that you need to have your Educloud username, password and one-time code ready in order to log in. This includes setting up two-factor authorization for Educloud, see above steps.
  1. Open VMWare Horizon on your machine
  2. The first time you run VMware Horizon Client for Educloud you need to connect to UiO's server. Click Add server

    "Add server" in VMWare Horizon

  3. Enter view.educloud.no  into the text field in the pop up window and click Connect

Textbox in VMWare where you are asked for "Name of Connection Server"

  4. You will be asked to enter your Educloud username and one-time code. Click Login after giving your credentials

Textbox where you have to enter your username and your one-time-code

  5. When you have entered your username and one-time code successfully, please enter your Educloud password
  6. You have now successfully added (and logged in to) the Educloud server in VMWare Horizon, and the available desktops will appear.

Different desktops you can choose from to log in to your Educloud server
