MAT-IN1105 – Programming, Modelling and Computations

Course content

The course gives an introduction to the programming language Python and in mathematical subjects well suited for numerical processing and programming. The course is a combination of MAT-INF1100 – Modelling and Computations (discontinued) and IN1900 – Introduction to Programming with Scientific Applications.

Learning outcome

After completing the course you

  • have the ability to formulate a problem mathematically and solve it by analytic or numerical methods
  • have the basic skills in programming in Python, such as loops, tests, graphic (plotting), functions and simple user interaction and file handling
  • have the ability to outline programs and algorithms from a mathematical problem
  • have the ability to carry out proof by induction and simulation of difference equations
  • have the ability to approximate functions by Taylor polynomials
  • have the ability to solve differential equations, both by formulas and approximately by numerical methods
  • have the ability to use error estimates to understand and check the error in numerical estimations.

Admission to the course

To take this course you must have been enrolled in one of the following study programs:

It is not possible to sign up for this subject via the Studentweb. Please contact your study programme for registration.

Special admission requirements

In addition to fulfilling theHigher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)
  • Chemistry (1+2)
  • Biology (1+2)
  • Information technology (1+2)
  • Geosciences (1+2)
  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies(in Norwegian).

Overlapping courses

Teaching

5 hours of lectures and 2 hours of group sessions per week throughout the semester. The teaching in this course consists of a combination of the teaching in MAT-INF1100 – Modelling and Computations (discontinued) and IN1900 – Introduction to Programming with Scientific Applications.

The number of groups offered can be adjusted during the semester, depending on attendance.

Examination

Midterm exam which counts 1/3 towards the final grade.

Final written exam which counts 2/3 towards the final grade.?

This course has mandatory assignments that must be approved before you can sit the final exam.

Note that the final written exam in MAT-IN1105 will be held at the same time as the final exam in MAT-INF1100 – Modelling and Computations (discontinued) and it will not be possible to take both of these courses in the same semester.

It is possible to take IN1900 – Introduction to Programming with Scientific Applications and MAT-IN1105 in the same semester, even though these courses have the same midterm exam. You then chose which midterm exam you attend and the result on the midterm exam will be the same in both courses.

Examination support material

Midterm examination: No examination support material is allowed.

Final examination: Formula sheet for MAT1100 and MAT-INF1100 and approved calculators are allowed. Information about approved calculators in Norwegian.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

This course offers both postponed and resit of examination. Read more:
