IN-KJM1900 – Introduction to Programming for Chemists

Course content
The course provides an introduction to programming with the programming language Python. The programming assignments are mainly about mathematical calculations related to topics from the natural sciences and chemistry-related problems.
The teaching in the first half of the semester will be shared with IN1900 – Introduction to Programming with Scientific Applications.?The chemistry students will have their own teaching and assignments related to chemistry-related problems in the second half.
Learning outcome
The goal of the course is that you should be able to:
- use basic Python programming such as loops, decisions, functions and various data structures
- make program sketches and algorithms based on the mathematical specifications of a scientific problem
- troubleshoot programs and construct tests to find and correct errors in your own programs
- use external Python modules in conjunction with own code to derive, integrate, find zeros and solve difference and differential equations
- create, apply and evaluate mathematical models that describe chemical problems, and write programs that make calculations with these models
- discuss the suitability of different numerical methods based on chemical problems

The course is reserved for students belonging to?Kjemi og biokjemi (bachelor)
Special admission requirements
In addition to fulfilling the?Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:
- Mathematics R1 or Mathematics (S1+S2)

Teaching
Teaching consist of 4 hours of lectures and?2 hours of group lectures each week.
Teaching in the first half of the semester is shared with IN1900.
In the second part of the teachings, it's mandatory attendance at the first lecture.

Examination
4 hours long?written digital midterm exam which counts 25% towards the final grade. 4 hours long?written digital exam?at the end of the semester counts as 75% of the final grade.
Mandatory assignments must be approved prior to the exam.
It will also be counted as one of?your three?attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: 1900, INF1100 – Introduction to programming with scientific applications (continued), INF1000 – Introduction to object-oriented programming (continued), INF1001 – Grunnkurs i objektorientert programmering (discontinued), IN1000 – Introduction to Object-oriented Programming,? and?BIOS1100 – Introduction to computational models for Biosciences.?The list is not exhaustive.
Examination support material
A double-sided sheet with commands ("cheat sheet") given in the course is allowed for use in the exam.
Language of examination
You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
