Share your screen, virtual whiteboard or presentation on Zoom

Zoom allows for screen sharing on desktop, tablet and mobile devices running Zoom. You might even use a virtual whiteboard during meetings or use your iPad as a digital blackboard during lectures

By deafult only the host can share screen. You can ether change the deafult for all your meetings on https://uio.zoom.us/profile/setting or open for sharing during a meeting

Sharing your screen

The host of a meeting can share screen. If others need to share screen or show a presentation, they must be made co-hosts.

To make someone a co-host, you find the participant picture of the participant and click on the three dots in the upper right corner. Select Make co-host from the menu that appears.

Here is a guide to screen sharing:

Before you start sharing your screen

Keep in mind that everyone will be able to see everything that happens on your screen. Deactivate alerts from e-mail and other applications if you share screen in an important meeting. We recommend using the Do Not Disturb mode on your iPhone/iPad.

Start sharing

It is possible to share content such as a screen or a single application. To share content, press the "Share" button in the bottom menu.

A popup window will show you what content you are able to share. Select the desired content and click "Share". You can choose between different screens and applications. In the example below, the powerpoint application is shared with the members of the lecture. The members of the lecture can now view the powerpoint presentation on their screen.

If you wish to also share your sound, ensure that the "Share computer sound" checkbox is enabled.

Using a virtual whiteboard

When you are shown the windows you have open on your computer, the Whiteboard option also appears. If you click on this instead of an actual window, you will get a virtual board that you can write on in the meeting.
To do this, select Whiteboard and click Share.
You can save the contents of the whiteboard by clicking Save on the far right of the menu that runs across the whiteboard.

Using your iPad or iPhone as a digital blackboard

When using Zoom, there may be situations where you wish to present hand-written information akin to what you would do on a blackboard. To achieve this, you may want to use a tablet with pen support (such as an iPad) as a blackboard.

Sharing your iPad or iPhone screen

1. Select Share Screen from the control menu at the bottom of the screen and then iPhone/iPad via AirPlay as seen below.

If your iPad is on a different iCloud account than the device hosting your Zoom meeting, AirPlay will not work. AirPlay will also fail to work as expected if your devices are connected to the wireless networks "Eduroam" or "Conferences" at UiO. In these situations, you will have to  use a cable to attach the iPad to your computer.

When you select iPhone/iPad over AirPlay, you will get the following interface with instructions on what to do next:

2. Follow the instructions on the screen:

  • Connect to the Wi-Fi network, as specified in the instructions
  • Tap Screen Mirroring. (How to find it: swipe down from the top right corner of the screen. On iOS11 or earlier, swipe up from the bottom of the screen)
  • Choose the Zoom-room, as specified in the instructions

3. The contents of your iPad will now show up in the sharing window. You may now use any application on your iPad as you would normally, and the contents will be shared via Zoom.

Recommended apps

A simple and fast solution for handwritten notes is using the standard Notes app. You could also set the iPad in "Dark Mode" for the background in Notes to turn black like a blackboard. See Apple's official documentation for Dark Mode.
