Over the last decades, international human rights law has grown in importance and in terms of norms, procedures, and institutions. Nowadays, we have nine core international human rights treaties that are widely ratified and ten so-called UN treaty bodies entrusted with monitoring compliance with the rights provided under their respective treaties.
Concerns primarily over the cost of living have prompted recent violent protests in countries such as Chile and Lebanon. When added to widespread populist mobilisations in several more - not least the Brexit saga in the UK, and the distinctive characteristics of the Trump era - the growth in popular discontent and potential for social upheaval becomes apparent.
Investigative interviewing is a non-coercive method for questioning victims, witnesses and suspects of crimes. Traditionally, the main aim of interrogations was to obtain a confession from the suspect and secure a conviction. 60 percent of countries still use torture to obtain such confessions. The term investigative interviewing represents a shift in police interviewing away from confessions and towards general evidence gathering.
The Norwegian welfare agency (NAV) has followed Norway’s own rules rather than the rules under the European Economic Area (EEA) when it withheld benefits from recipients who had traveled to other EU and EEA countries, and secured prison sentences for some of them.
Norway has also been found in violation of the European Convention of Human Rights in recent child protection cases by the European Court of Human Rights.
Machine learning, pattern recognition and digital data practices are increasingly commonplace in Law Enforcement. This presentation gives a general orientation about the rise of digital tools in law enforcement. Based on an extensive study of predictive policing software, it also argues that these tools have their own politics.
