HMAN4210 – Leadership, Management and Organization Development

Course content

There are two main topics and the course; organizational design and perspectives on leadership and management. The course provides different perspective on the challenges of managing Health care organizations. Specific management topics like clinical leadership, team effectiveness and influences will be discussed. Organizing is one way of managing the provision of health care.

In the course we will discuss fundamental features of organizational design and explore the potential, and limitations of managing through designing and redesigning organizations. Hence, the aim of the course is to provide the participants with managerial tools that are important for leaders and managers in health care organizations.

Knowledge

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Distinguish between management and leadership
  • Describe important features of clinical management
  • Describe different perspectives on employee motivation
  • Explain different perspectives on team effectiveness
  • Describe how different organizational models affect coordination
  • Describe typical organizational features of health care organizations
  • Recognize important aspects of strategy formulation in health care organizations

Skills

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Analyze leadership cases from different theoretical perspectives
  • Discuss common strategies for influence
  • Discuss strategies for team effectiveness.
  • Discuss key elements of hospital organization design
  • Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of different organizational designs

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Develop competency in personal leadership
  • Develop own strategies for team leadership and influence.
  • Reflect upon how organizational design can be used to improve organizational performance

Admission

Teaching

A variety of contact hours (i.e. hours spent by students on activities guided by teaching staff), independent work, compulsory work placements, preparation for assessment and the time necessary for the assessment.

Compulsory assignment:

3 term papers (approved/not approved) must be approved in order to sit for the exam. Will be valid for three years.

Written school exam (4 hours).

Grading

The Board at the University of Oslo has decided to introduce detailed guidelines for all examinations, which take place at the University. The description of the grading should be clear and transparent. This is done to ensure alignment between learning outcomes, assignments, and grading. The written examination is conducted in the digital examination system Inspera. You will need to familiarize yourself with the digital examination arrangements in Inspera.

Language of examination

For students at Eu-HEM: English

For students at HEPAM: The problem set will be given in English. Answers can be given in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

For HEPMA students:

For Eu-HEM students:

An EU-hem student cannot present her or himself for the examination in a course more than two times. There will be held re-sits for EU-hem students who have failed an exam or who have legitimate absence (usually illness) in January and August. If you are entitled to a re-sit you must contact the student advisor via email no longer than one week after the result of the exam has been published.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
