HFIN4210 – Finance and Investment

Course content
This course gives an introduction to corporate finance: how to evaluate what to buy, at what price, and how to pay for it. In addition to learning theory, the course is focused on doing calculations - mathematical problem solving.
The main thematic areas discussed are: (i) introduction to corporate finance (ii) valuation, (iii) project analysis, (iv) optimal capital structure, and (v) financing large investments in tangible assets.
Learning outcome

- Corporate financing strategies
- How companies make investment decisions
- The impact of risk and uncertainty on decision-making
- Financing strategies for tangible assets
Skills:?
You will develop the ability to:
- Evaluate various financing and investment options
- Construct decision trees for scenarios with multiple outcomes
- Determine net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR), and accounting rate of return (ARR)
General Competence:?
You will be equipped to:
- Develop competence in corporate finance
- Critically assess the strengths and weaknesses of different investment decisions
- Formulate finance and investment strategies tailored to healthcare institutions

This course is only available for students at the following master programmes:
- Health Economics, Policy and Management (master)
- European Master in Health Economics and Management (master)

The course will combine lectures with case studies and assignments related to the Health economics sector.

Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
For Eu-HEM students:
An EU-hem student cannot present her or himself for the examination in a course more than two times. There will be held re-sits for EU-hem students who have failed an exam or who have legitimate absence (usually illness) in January and August. If you are entitled to a re-sit you must contact the student advisor via email no longer than one week after the result of the exam has been published.
