Course content

This course continues on the topics of systems of linear equations and differential equations from MAT1001, and is split into two main topics:

1) More function theory in one and several variables(maximum- and minimum problems, integration and linear approximation). Applications.

2) More linear algebra(Linear transformations, linear independence, invertible matrices, diagonalisation). Systems of differential equations. Applications.

Learning outcome

Under the motto "More mathematics" this course provides you with more mathematical knowledge which will be of central importance for further studies in natural sciences such as e.g. chemistry. The objective is to provide you with more analytic and numerical skills that can be applied to problems in natural sciences.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)
  • Chemistry (1+2)
  • Biology (1+2)
  • Information technology (1+2)
  • Geosciences (1+2)
  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

Recommended previous knowledge

MAT1001 – Mathematics 1 (discontinued).

Overlapping courses

The overlap between the 3 courses MAT1001 – Mathematics 1 (discontinued), MAT1012 – Mathematics 2 (discontinued), MAT1100 – Calculus is 10 credits in total; you get 20 credits for these 3 courses. The same goes if you replace MAT1001 – Mathematics 1 (discontinued) with MAT1110 – Calculus and Linear Algebra.

Teaching

4 hours of lectures and 2 hours problem solving in plenum per week. In addition there will be individual exercise solving sessions during the week, with guidance available.

Examination

2 mandatory assignments. Detailed information about compulsory assignments will be published on the course information page at the beginning of the semester.

A digital written midterm exam and final written exam at the end of the semester will both add up to the final grade. Both exams are compulsory and have to be taken in the same semester.

Midterm exam counts for 1/3 and the final exam counts for 2/3. The final grade is based on the total score and a general impression after the final examination.
