Dear all,
Hope you are all taking some time off and enjoying the weather.
When you get bored from that: here are the (suggested) solutions to the exam
Have a nice summer!
Best,
Adrian
Dear all,
Here is the zoom link:
https://uio.zoom.us/j/62129194637
Meeting ID: 621 2919 4637
The meeting opens at 10:00 and stays open at least one hour. There will be a waiting room as I will only talk with one person at the time, so so patience migth be needed.
Good luck with the exam!
Adrian
Dear all,
During the exam there will be a Zoom meetingroom open for about one hour. It will open at 10:00 and the Zoom link will be available on the course page. There will be a wating room and you will have the chance to ask me questions one-to-one about the exam.
Best,
Adrian
Dear all,
Hope exam preparations are going well!
Here are some more exercises you can do in that regard:
Ex. 2 and 4 (sorry, this said 2 and 3 before) from 2012,
Ex. 1 from 2011,
Ex. 2 and 4 from 2005,
Ex. 2 from 2006.
The old exams can be found here.
Next wednesday will be the last zoom lecture, and I'll go through the exercises above and those we did not have time to do this week.
Best,
Adrian
Dear all,
Here are some old exam exercises I recomend you try:
Ex. 1,2 and 3 from 2009,
Ex. 2 and 3 from 2010,
Ex. 1 and 2 from 2013,
Ex. 2 from 2015.
The exams can be found here: Old exams
I will go through these exercises next week.
Also, the solution to the mandatory assignment can be found here.
Best,

In general, the following guidelines apply in courses at the Department of Mathematics:
- The examination lasts 4 hours. In addition, you will have an extra 30 minutes to scan and upload your PDF.
- All examination aids are allowed (e.g. books, online resources, scientific programming tools, etc.).
- It...
Dear all,
There will be no lecture today.
We will go through the latest exercises and lecture notes on Wednesday.
Also, if there are any older weekly exercises you missed out on or want to go through again, please send me an email and I'll prepare for that.
Best,
Adrian
Dear all,
I have posted a new video lecture on eigenvalue problems for elliptic PDEs, and some new exercises:
Best,
Adrian
Dear all,
I have uploaded a updated curriculm list:
Have a look, and please let me know if something is missing or if there is something in there that we have not gone through in the lectures.
Best,
Adrian
Dear all,
I've uploaded a new exercise set (mostly) on weak formulation and analysis of elliptic boundary value problems.
Best,
Adrian
Dear all,
Since the latest video lectures were uploaded on Friday, I think it is best to wait until Wednesday to discuss these. I will upload a new exercise set tomorrow, and an updated curriculum.
See you on Wednesday.
Best,
Adrian
Dear all,
A new exercise set it out. It concerns various Sobolev space topics.
I currently have the flu, so tomorrows zoom lecture will be cancelled.
I will put out this weeks video lectures as soon as I finish them, but there will be some delays due to the flue.
Best,
Adrian
Dear all,
Two new videos are out. One deals with the Rellich-Kondrachov compactness theorem, the other with the Poincaré inequality.
This will be the last lecture on properties of Sobolev spaces. We are now ready to apply the theory to PDEs.
Next monday we will go through the lecture notes, and I will give a short summary of the main results from chapter 5 in Evans book.
As I have to be away the rest of this week, there will be no exercises this week, but we will resume that from next week.
Best,
Adrian
Dear all,
I'll be wathing the Abel prize announcement today, so the Zoom lecture will have to wait until 13:15.

Dear all,
The mandatory assignment is now out:
The deadline for handing it in is Friday 26'th of March, 14:30.
There will not be weekly exercises during in this period, but I will take questions about the assignment in exercise sessions on Mondays.
Good luck!
-Adrian
Dear all,
The mandatory assigment (Oblig) will be released next Thursday 11.03 and have deadline Friday 26.03.
More information on that later.
After talking with the administration, it seems that the initial exam date is fixed. Hence we will have a written home exam on 07.06, from 09:00 to 13:00.
UiO is allowing physical lectures for groups of <= 20 people, but digital teaching must still be an option. In MAT4305 that means things will continue as before, with only digital teaching (i.e. video lectures and Zoom sessions), since I don't have time to do both physical and digital teaching.
However, I will start having office hours between 14-15 on Thursdays. I'm in room 1004, 10'th floor, Nils Henrik Abels Hus.
Please come by if you have questions or other things you would like to discuss.
Best,
Adrian
Dear all,
Two videos on compactness are out now.
I'll put up this weeks exercises later today.
Also, don't hesitate to use the lecture notes to accompany the videos.
You get access by going to Lecture notes and asking for permission.
Best,
Adrian
Dear all,
I put out the videos and exercises for this week yesterday.
After hearing from you about which exam form you would prefer, I have decided that we will have a written exam.
I will send a poll with possible dates soon, so we can decide on that.
Also, I found this youtube channel that has some nice lectures on functional analysis:
https://www.youtube.com/c/brightsideofmaths/videos
Check it out:)
Best,
Adrian
Dear all,
The two first video lectures are out:
/studier/emner/matnat/math/MAT4305/v21/timeplan/index.html
One more will be out soon!
Correction: due to a problem with sound, I will instead give the third lecture on Hilbert spaces on Zoom tomorrow.
Sorry for the inconvenience!
Best,
Adrian
Dear all,
I have put out the first set of weekly exercises. It can be found under the exercises tab.
Best regards,
Adrian
Dear all,
Thanks to those who attended the meeting today and gave valuable input.
I will put out a longer update on how the course will be organized later this week, including a sketch of the curriculum and the course material.
The first proper lecture will be on Wednesday, and a Zoom-link can be found on Canvas.
The first exercise set will be available on this page tomorrow.
Don't hesitate to email me at adriankir@math.uio.no if you have any questions!
Best regards,
Adrian
Hi,
Your new lecturer for the course is me, Adrian Kirkeby.
I’m a postdoc at section 4, working with PDEs and inverse problems.
Since the replacement of Snorre happened at such short notice, I still need some time to get fully up to speed with things.
The first thing I want to do is to use the lecture on Monday to find out what you know from before, and to present you with some possible topics that we can focus on during the course.
Also I want to hear your thoughts and discuss how we should organize the course and the teaching. Teaching under corona is a new experience for me, but you probably have a better understanding of what works and what doesn’t by now.
I will also prepare exercises that you can do to brush up on some PDEs and multivariable calculus.
Best regards,
Adrian Kirkeby
Dear all,
We are working on finding a new teacher for this course. More information will follow.
