Course content

The course gives deep knowledge of the theory behind some basic problem areas in numerical analysis like the numerical eigenvalue problem, iterative solution of systems of equations, interpolation and quadrature problems and computation of best approximations.

Learning outcome

After having completed the course you will have deep knowledge about:

  • Some concrete computational methods for determining eigenvalues, iterative solutions for solving linear systems of equations, optimization problems, interpolation and quadrature problems, methods for computing best approximations.
  • Strategies both for constructing numerical methods and verifying their convergence and convergence rates.
  • The mathematical theory behind the methods.

After having completed the course you have the skills to:

  • Program numerical methods efficiently.
  • Employ numerical methods in the solution of practical problems, including a good understanding of the errors involved in the methods.
  • Present and communicate the results of the computations systematically and clearly.

Recommended previous knowledge

The course is a natural continuation of MAT3110 – Introduction to Numerical Analysis / MAT4110 – Introduction to Numerical Analysis and it is preferable with a background equivalent to MAT2100 – Elementary Real Analysis / MAT2400 – Real Analysis.

Overlapping courses

Teaching

4 hours lectures/exercises each week throughout the semester.

Upon the attendance of three or fewer students, the lecturer may, in conjunction with the Head of Teaching, change the course to self-study with supervision.

Examination

Final written exam or final oral exam, which counts 100 % towards the final grade.

The form of examination will be announced by the lecturer by 1 October/1 March for the autumn semester and the spring semester respectively.

This course has 2 mandatory assignments that must be approved before you can sit the final exam.

No examination support material is allowed.

Language of examination

Courses taught in English will only offer the exam paper in English. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
