Course content

This course is a continuation of high school calculus, but goes deeper into the theoretical foundations and develops the methods further in order to deal with more complicated cases. The course also contains introductions to complex numbers, power series, and continuity. MAT1100 builds on the most advanced mathematics courses from upper secondary education and forms the basis for MAT1110 – Calculus and Linear Algebra.

Learning outcome

After completing the course

  • you know how to carry out proofs by induction, and you can provide simple mathematical arguments and present them in a clear and understandable way with suitable notation and terminology
  • you are familiar with the complex numbers and can calculate with them in Cartesian and polar form
  • you are familiar with the Completeness Principle for the real numbers and know how it is used in developing the theory of functions of one variable
  • you know how to define continuity, limits, derivatives, and integrals precisely, and can compute limits, derivatives, and integrals of functions of one variable
  • you can use the theory in the course to solve modeling problems, especially problems concerning integration, optimization, and related rates
  • you can present your calculations and arguments in a clear and coherent way with suitable notation and terminology.
  • you can find formulas for solutions to some differential equations
  • you can compute Taylor polynomials with remainder
  • you know what it means for a series to converge, know how to use tests of convergence to decide convergence and find regions of convergence

Special admission requirements

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)

  • Chemistry (1+2)

  • Biology (1+2)

  • Information technology (1+2)

  • Geosciences (1+2)

  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

Overlapping courses

Teaching

6 hours of lectures and 2 hours of group sessions per week throughout the semester.

The number of groups offered can be adjusted during the semester, depending on attendance.

Examination

Midterm exam which counts 1/3 towards the final grade.

Final written exam which counts 2/3 towards the final grade.?

This course has 2 mandatory assignments that must be approved before you can sit the final exam.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
