KJM5910 – Radiochemical methods

Course content

The subject focuses on applications of radioactivity and radiation. The course is based on knowledge comparable to KJM 5900 and starts with different methods for production ofradioactive substances in the larboratory and in nature, and radiochemical methods for separation of single components from complex reaction mixtures. Key words for application of radioactivity are: Radioanalytical methods (instrumental and radiochemical neutron activation analysis, particle induced activation analysis, medical diagnostic and therapeutic application, radioactive waste, radiotracer methods (laboratory and large scale), radioecology and nuclear dating methods.

Learning outcome

The subject widens the basis for and the practical experience with the treatment of radioactive subtances in the laboratory and field experiments. Furthermore, the students get understanding for how radioactivity can be used in different professions e.g. medicine, petroleum production, environmental studies, geology and archaeology. The subject gives competence for work with radiochemistry/nuclear chemistry and related prfessions where radioactivity has an important role. The chemical principles for this kind of work are central.

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.

Teaching

The course comprises 30 hours of lectures, 6 laboratory exercises, each on half a day, and 20 hours of exercises. The teaching is given in the last part of the semester. Students must meet at the first lecture.

The first lecture and the first laboratory lesson are mandatory. If you are unable to join the mandatory lessons, you have to inform the Expedition Office in advance (phone 22 85 54 46). If you fail to register in either of these ways, you will lose your access to the group lectures and to the examinations for the semester.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination
