As announced will Rop Gonggrijp be guest lecturer on the 20th of April and talk about electronic voting machines (computers and via Internet). He is recently in the news as co-producer of a secret Pentagon video. This video was 'leaked' to Wikileaks and shows how, among others, two Reuter journalists are killed by indiscriminate weapon fire from an US helicopter. You can watch the video at Collateral Murder
I hope you all had a nice Easter/Spring break and that you are now working on your group essays. For next week, please read both articles and bring photos and images that, in your opinion, visualise these texts. We will discuss what it means to take an ethical perspective in our research and work. If you have the interest and time to read a bit more, please look at this article by Rafael Capurro: Information Technology as an Ethical Challenge
An example of how difficult it is to keep clear boundaries between society and science. The minister announced a moratorium on the introduction of Bt-eggplants in India: “As a responsible minister I had to take a considered decision. It is responsible to science, it is responsive to society,” he said. Here you can read the (short) article.
Here is a link to a documentary on radiation: A Radiant Day. It is about safety levels for radiation, about how scientific facts about radiation are established. Do you see connections with the articles by Callon and Star?
We made groups today and group members will interview each other using the four questions in the hand-out. Bring the answers in a format that is suitable for the group-network you will begin to map out on the wall. We have the following groups:
