19.01.2004Dino Karabeg? Store Auditorium? Introduction to Information Design? The Information Design class INF3210/INF4210 is a learnig environment for studying information design. As we have defined it, information design is simply the conscious creation and use of information. Information design spans a very broad range of interests, from new media and web-design tools to the fundamental questions of knowledge and consciousness. The students are invited to explore this rich and exciting space according to individual inclinations and interests, mainly through project work. We learn information design by designing the information design class and the class materials. ?
26.01.2004Dino Karabeg? Store Auditorium? Polyscopic document design? We know what a book looks like, and a letter and a newspaper article. But how can we meaningfully depart from the traditional document formats and DESIGN our documents? Methodology is the answer. The Polyscopic Modeling methodology gives us criteria, terminology and guidelines for designing new and different document formats. ?
02.02.2004Dino Karabeg? Store Auditorium? Information design - an informing as we need it? Why do we need a new approach to information? In what ways is this new approach really new and different? To understand information design as the new approach to information, we look at the developments during the past century which have radically changed our understanding of the meaning and purpose of information, as well as our information needs. The main characteristics of Polyscopic Modeling, which has been proposed as a prototype of the new approach, easily follow from such analysis. ?
09.02.2004Dino Karabeg? Store Auditorium? Designing order, meaning and truth? In the jungle of 'pieces of information' information design is needed to restore order, meaning and truth. The lecture surveys the elements of the Polyscopic Modeling methodology which are most relevant for that task.?
16.02.2004Dino Karabeg? Store Auditorium? Information design by example? The main message so far is clear: Our traditional informing is not enough. We need to design new kinds of information. But what are those new kinds of information? How are they different from the common ones? What practical consequences might they have? Examples are provided to give possible answers to those questions.?
23.02.2004Naci Akkok? Store Auditorium? Towards a document structuring methodology? Starting from structured programming and object orientation, several decades of development have given us a number of methodologies for structuring computer programs. The lecture surveys some of the main program structuring ideas and points to their possible adaptations to document structure design.?
23.02.2004Almira Karabeg? Store Auditorium? Visual information design? Visuals are a communication medium of extraordinary richness and power. The lecture covers some of the main methodological elements of visual information design.?
01.03.2004Dino Karabeg? Store Auditorium? XML in document structuring and e-business? The XML-based technologies open up a new stage in Internet development with a wealth of possibilities for creative document structuring and new types of business. The lecture surveys the world of the XML technologies and their applications. As "desert", we show how the described technologies can be used as an instrument for positive socio-cultural change, by reviewing our ATI project.?
08.03.2004Vladan Zdravkovich, Ph.D. Director of Research at the Institute for Creative and Interactive Studies, University of Kalmar, Sweden. For the past 20 years Dr. Zdravkovich has been working as director, researcher and producer and as a professional consultant to industry, government and education in digital media, computer animation and film.? Store Auditorium? Multidimensional information and interaction design? The lecture will combine ideas and applications in data visualization - virtual 3D environments and 3D holographic representation and usage of other spaces that complement visual 3D space as are scent, sound and air flow. Applications are both to business and to different kind of complex research, culture, leisure, art and political issues.

15.04.2004BBC movie? Store Auditorium? Shopology - the science of shopping? We will be showing an excellent BBC documentary about shop design, explaining the subtleties of the world-wide and age-old art of using color, smell, shapes and other effects to attract customers. A valuable source of insights for information designers.?
15.04.2004Dino Karabeg? Store Auditorium? Polyscopic user manual design? Since they require both efficiency in locating information (and therefore brevity), and completeness of information(and therefore verbosity), user manyuals are a natural test case for polyscopic document structuring. It is shown how the Polyscopic Modeling techniques can be used to meet both requirements. Guidelines for student projects are given.?
22.04.2004?se Brandvold. Designer, editor in VRENG and Addbusters Network activist.? Store Auditorium? Information, not manipulation: The ADDBUSTERS approach? Information is the supreme power in the Age of Information. The power of information can be used both to manipulate us and to liberate us. The Addbusters is a network of graphic and media designers who want to put their life's work and talent on the 'liberation' side of the scale. ?
22.04.2004Dino Karabeg? Store Auditorium? Information, not manipulation: The information design approach? There are two reasons why advertising is so common. The first is the lack of proper information which we could use for making choices. The second is the lack of information about information which would show us the effects of advertising. Information design can provide both.?
29.03.2004Graham Moore, Chief Scientist, ONTOPIA. Graham Moore is one of the leading contributors to the Topic Maps standards. Among other things, he has created two topic-map engines. ? Store Auditorium? Topic Maps ? The presentation will be primarily an introduction to Topic Maps touching on the following themes. - The Findability Problem - The nature of Indexes, Glossaries and Thesauri - The Topic Map Model - Knowledge Merging - The use of Scope and Contexts - Relation to RDF and the Semantic Web - Standards Activities - Applications of Topic Maps

Thoughts about how topic maps could be related to polyscopic modelling will be given.?

19.04.2004Reidar Holtskog, Professor, KHIO. Professor Holtskog is one of the leading Norwegian communication designers. He co-designed the Norwegian Profile and the 1994 Winter Olympic Profile, among others.? Store Auditorium? Graphic Profiling? Colors, fonts and other elements of visual expression play a subtle and often neglected, yet central role in information design. Like the tone of the voice or the clothes we wear in a social occasion, they can be formal or informal, appropriate or inappropriate, and in any event they convey a strong message which we need to have under control.

We are fortunate to host this lecture by Professor Holtskog, who is a leading Norwegian authority on graphic profiling. ?

26.04.2004Dino Karabeg? Store Auditorium? Project and exam guidelines and ID class design? Final guidelines for project work and exams will be given. The experiences from this year's class and ideas for next year will be discussed. Remember: We are co-designing this class. Come with good suggestions.?
26.04.2004Almira Karabeg, Naci Akkok and Dino Karabeg? Store Auditorium? Continuing with Information Design ? The Information Design Group at the Institute for Informatics is one of the leading centers in the development the information design orientation internationally. As such it presents attractive opportunities for students wanting to continue with information design. Various projects and activities that are being developed within the group will be presented. ?
