INF1060 – Introduction to operating systems and data communications

Course content
The course gives an introduction to operating systems, as seen both from the user and the programmers point of view. It will also give some insight into how data communication is performed and how to make programs which make use of such communication. The C programming language is applied.
Learning outcome
- know the basic mechanisms in the C programming language
- have a basic knowledge of the most important components in an operating system
- be able to develop small programs which use operating system services
- have elementary knowledge in the area of data communication
- be able to develop programs with processes that communicate, both machine-internally and over a network

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:
- Mathematics R1 or Mathematics (S1+S2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies. Read more about special admission requirements (in Norwegian).

INF1010 – Object oriented programming (continued) and INF1040 – Digital Representation (discontinued) /INF 103.

6 credits INF 103/IN 147, 3 credits IN 147A, 3 credits IN140 and 3 credits IN142.
Teaching
2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of tuition each week. There are mandatory assignments which must be passed before the student may proceed to take the home exam, and take the final exam. Rules for mandatory assignments.
Examination
This course has digital examination. One graded assignments (home exams) counting 40 % and a final four hour written exam counting 60 %. Both exam must be passed, and passed in the same semester.
The mandatory assignments must be approved prior to the exam.

Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
