Course content

Representation of numbers, text, sound, pictures and video in a computer. Exchanging such data over Internet.

Learning outcome

After the course, the student should understand how numbers, text, sound, pictures and video are represented as bits and bytes in order to be stored and transferred. They should know methods for compression, encryption and decryption.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 or Mathematics (S1+S2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies. Read more about special admission requirements (in Norwegian).

3 credits INF 103/IN 147/IN 147A, 2 credits IN 140.

Teaching

The course will run through the whole autumn semester, with 2 hours lecturing and 4 hours group work each week Three mandatory deliverables must be accepted to have access to the final examination. The course includes several mandatory deliverables which must be approved in order to take the exam.

Examination

Grades will be given based on a final 4 hours written exam.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination
