IN4011 – Transformative Design
Course content
In this course you'll learn about transformative design - design towards sustainable futures. You will use?knowledge of different approaches to design in a real?project where you'll make a design-proposal in cooperation with the public or private sector, or a large research project.
Learning outcome
After taking this course you'll:
- have an understanding of how transformative design can be realized through various methodological approaches
- have a very good understanding of how different methodological approaches shape projects
- be able to explain the choice of an approach to a problem, as well as the choice of methods, tools and techniques
- be able to cooperate in a team
- have?developed a professional relationship with the external clients
- be able to make reflections in regards to key?ethical,?societal and professional issues related to your project
- be able to view?the connections between theory and practice in a new way
Admission to the course
The number of admissions is limited to a maximum of 40 together for IN3010 and IN4011.
Only students in the study programme Informatics: design, use, interaction (master) will be admitted to?IN4011.
Formal prerequisite knowledge
IN2020 – Methods in Interaksjonsdesign
Teaching
2 hours of teaching per?week, consisting of lectures, discussions, design criticism, and presentations of progression with active participation.
The main emphasis of the work will be?independent teamwork, which will be aimed at employers from the public or private sector or major research projects. Students must work together as a design team, where everyone contributes.
There is mandatory attendance on the first lecture, and a minimum of 80% attendance at the course otherwise.
Examination
The assessment consists of three parts:
- Oral mid-term presentation of the project
- Oral final presentation of the project
- Written report
All parts must be passed and must be passed in the same semester.
Compared to IN3010, the following additional requirements apply for master's students:
- Additional curriculum related to the chosen method: At least three related and foundational research articles within the chosen methodology.
- Additional requirements for assessment (presentations and final report) regarding explanation of how the problem statement was identified as the starting point for the design work, careful justification of the chosen research method in relation to the problem statement, and clear articulation of the design/research process.
It will also be counted as one of?your three?attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: IN3010 – Transformative Design
Language of examination
The team can submit the report in Norwegian or English. Likewise for the presentations.

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about?the grading system.
Resit an examination
In this course, postponed exams are not offered for exam candidates who are ill before the exam or who become ill during the exam. A deferred submission deadline may be offered. Deadlines may be extended up to 7 days; the duration of the extension depends on the duration of the exam.?The illness must be documented with a doctor's certificate dated no later than the ordinary submission date. You must submit the doctor's certificate to the Student Administration at IFI before the submission deadline for the home exam.
