Course content
In this course you will learn about research in HCI (Human-Computer Interaction). We explore different approaches to design within the HCI field, and you gain insight into methods, tools and techniques for HCI research. We place special importance to quantitative analysis and design of experiments. You should be able to practice the methods through three mandatory assignments.
Learning outcome
After finishing IN2020, you will have an overview of research methods in HCI and be able to:
- discuss the potential of both qualitative and quantitative methods for HCI
- choose among different HCI research approaches and explain your choice of methods, tools and techniques to solve particular design problems
- reflect on key ethical, social and professional issues in relation to own and others' work
Admission to the course

Students belonging to the bachelor programme?Informatikk: design, bruk, interaksjon (bachelor) will be prioritized.
Special admission requirements
In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:
- Mathematics R1 or Mathematics (S1+S2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies. Read more about special admission requirements (in Norwegian).
Formal prerequisite knowledge
The course presuppose IN1050?or IN1060.

- 5 credits overlap with INF2260 – Interaksjonsdesign (discontinued).
- 5 credits overlap with INF4060 – Interaksjonsdesign (discontinued).
- 5 credits overlap with INF4260 – Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) (discontinued).
- 5 credits overlap with INF3260 – Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) (discontinued).
Teaching
2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of group exercises each week.
You must submit and pass the mandatory assignments to be allowed to take the exam. More about requirements for submission of assignments, group work and legal cooperation under guidelines for mandatory tasks.
Examination
4 hour written digital final exam. All mandatory assignments must be approved prior to the final exam.
Examination support material
No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Resit an examination
Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.
Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
