NAM1020 – Environmental science
Course content
The students will work with two projects: one group-essay followed by an oral presentation and one individual essay. The students will chose topics from a given list, which will not be the same each year, with themes as for instance; biodiversity, food security, water supply, marine pollution, pesticides and alternatives, pollution and health, the stratospheric ozone layer and environmental chemistry.
Learning outcome
After completing this course students should be able to use and read literature critically, accomplish a field study, collect and analyse samples, and write and present a scientific report on a theme from environmental science.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2
And in addition one of these:
- Physics (1+2)
- Chemistry (1+2)
- Biology (1+2)
- Information technology (1+2)
- Geosciences (1+2)
- Technology and theories of research (1+2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

NAM1000 – Environmental science: The Atmosphere, Climate, and Global Warming (discontinued), NAM1010 – Bio-geological processes (discontinued)
Teaching
The students will work on two projects and get tutoring from a professor. The students will work together both in colloquia groups and at the WEB-based Classfronter. Lectures will be given in selected themes.
Examination
The students have to deliver two obligatory written essays; one group-essay and one individual essay. The group-essay, the individual essay, and a final written exam will each count for 1/3 of the final grade. Letter grade (A-F).
This course offers new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination.
