Course content

This course is reserved exclusively for Self financed Bachelor Students.

This course provides practice in the following four language skills: pronunciation/speaking, writing, listening and reading Norwegian. It introduces Norwegian phonetics and grammar, e.g. word order, the declension of nouns, adjectives and verbs, the use of tenses and pronouns and expression of time. Covered topics and vocabulary include presenting oneself, family relationships, living conditions, study situations, work, holidays and leisure, tourist attractions and food and drink. Practice is also provided in expressing needs, assessments and feelings.

This is a skills course with a final examination.

Learning outcome

Students will be able to understand oral discourse about topics from everyday life and will be able to talk about these topics using basic vocabulary and simple, specific styles of presentation. Their pronunciation will be good enough to ensure that communication is not hampered. They will be able to read textbooks and similar texts about topics relating to everyday life. They will be able to write about topics addressed in the course and express thoughts and opinions using simple language. Finally, they will be familiar with the main rules of Norwegian grammar covered in the course.

Final marks will show the extent to which students have benefited from the course.

This course is reserved exclusively for Self financed Bachelor students at the University of Oslo.

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

No previous knowledge of Norwegian is required.

Teaching

This is an 84-hour course that requires active student participation. Each week, the students will be given written assignments.

Compulsory activities

In order to sit for the examination, the following compulsory assignments must be approved by the teacher:

  • 75 % attendance (63 hours)
  • One compulsory oral presentation

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

The exam is a 3-hour written examination and an oral exam. The written and oral exam accounts for 50 % of the final grade. Both parts must be passed in the same semester.

Use of sources and citation

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

No examination support material is allowed.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in Norwegian, and you submit your response in Norwegian.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
