MES4290 – Topics in Middle Eastern Literature and Culture
Course content
This course focuses on one or more central topics in the field of Middle Eastern literature and culture. These topics are predominantly related to past or ongoing research activities in the Department of Studies of Culture, Religion, Asia and the Middle East (IKOS) and can include wide-ranging topics such as satire, environmental literature, translation studies, and social media.??
Learning outcome
Students who successfully complete the course will be able to:?

read both primary (whether in translation or Arabic, Persian, or Turkish original) and secondary literature extensively?

analyze sources of various kinds as relevant to the topic?

discuss, produce, and present academic knowledge in oral and written forms?

This course is only available for students enrolled in the programme Asia and Middle East studies, programme option Middle East Studies and South Asian Culture and Society.
Teaching
The course includes a series of seminars held throughout the semester. Students are expected to attend the seminars and give presentations on assigned readings in class.??

Access to teaching:
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.?

Language of examination
Assignment specifications are given in English. Students may write their submissions in English, Norwegian, Danish or Swedish.
