MES4260 – Topics in Hebrew/Semitic Studies II
Course content
This course focuses on central topics in Hebrew and Semitic language and linguistics. The various topics offered in the course are related to past or ongoing research in the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages, such as issues of Hebrew language history, modern political texts in Hebrew and Arabic, Judeo-Arabic and Hebrew religious and philosophical texts, and modern Semitic linguistics.
The specific topic of the course will be announced before the semester starts, and the course does not overlap with MES4250 – Topics in Hebrew/Semitic Studies I (discontinued).
The course is based on reading, analysis, and discussion of selected texts in Hebrew and secondary literature in English. Training in methodology, team work, essay writing, and oral presentation is an integral part of the course.

Learning outcome
Participants will learn to read both primary and secondary literature extensively, and to analyze sources of various kinds relevant to the topic: literary texts (online or print); texts representing various registers of Hebrew; and political texts in Hebrew and Arabic. Participants will also learn to deal academically with current issues in modern Semitic linguistics and to discuss, produce, and present academic knowledge in oral and written forms.

Admission
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Teaching
The course is taught through a combination of lectures and seminars organised as clusters throughout the semester. The course presupposes active participation.
Compulsory tuition activities such as presentations and submission of assignments must be completed and submitted within the given deadlines, and approved by the teacher in order for you to sit the exam. Approved tuition activities are only valid for the current semester.
Examination
Term paper, to be submitted in Fronter. The term paper should be between 8-10 pages, not counting front page and references.

Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
