Programme structure
The duration of this programme is four semesters (two years).
It consists of a Master’s degree thesis (60 credits ) and a series of courses (60 credits), 120 credits in total. The selected courses should be relevant to the work on the Master’s degree thesis.
The table below shows the structure of the MA degree. All teaching is conducted in English, and the thesis should be written in English.

Obligatory courses:
- ENG4391 – Writing a Thesis on a Literary Topic (continued)
- ENG4310 – Literary Theory in English (continued)
- ENG4390 – Master's Thesis in Literature in English
50 credits elective courses:
- Minimum 20 credits selected from Group 1. Group 1 contains courses where Bachelor and Master students are taught together (joint 2000/4000 level). If you have taken a 2000 level course, the same 4000 version of that course will not give you credits due to overlap.
- Minimum 20 credits selected from Group 2. Group 2 contains courses that are exclusively for MA students (4000 level only).
- Up to 20 credits may be chosen freely among other literature courses within the Master's programme in Literature Studies or, provided the course is relevant for the Master's thesis and has been approved by the supervisor, from other Master's programmes. These 20 credits can replace courses from Group 1.
