Programme structure
The Master's programme Electrical engineering, informatics and technology is a two year full time study consisting of 120 ECTS credits.
The programme has the following structure:
- Theoretical curriculum, 60 ECTS credits
- Master's thesis, 60 ECTS credits
The programme has two programme options:

The Master's programme is regulated by the rules of The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
Theoretical curriculum and Master's thesis
The programme is built around a Master's thesis, which is an independent scientific research work of 60 ECTS credits, and a theoretical curriculum of a total of 60 ECTS credits. The theoretical curriculum must be completed during the first three semesters. As a master student you get to specialize within a programme option, and which courses you take depends of the programme option.
You must find a supervisor and work out a project description for your thesis in the first semester. The work with your thesis equals to a full academic year. The thesis is completed with an oral presentation and examination at the end of the fourth semester.
The following guidelines regard the composition of the theoretical curriculum which in total consists of 60 ECTS credits:
- At least 40 ECTS credits of courses on the 4000/5000-level
- Up to 20 ECTS credits of courses on 3000-level may be included if approved by the programme board

It is possible to carry out the programme part-time. In such a case it must be discussed with an advisor at the Department of Physics.
Honours certificate
Are you academically ambitious? It is possible to supplement your master's degree with an honours certificate worth 20 credits. You take the certificate concurrently with the master's programme.
Recognition of Master's courses from former education
If you are admitted to the Master's programme and you have completed Master's courses outside the University of Oslo, you may apply to have these courses recognised as part of your degree. Please contact the Department of Physics for more information.
