Some students do not need a visa to visit Norway because they hold a passport from a country that Norway has a visa exemption agreement with. This also applies if you have a residence permit in an EU/EEA country or if you have a special passport.
1. Citizenship
Check the UDI list of persons who do not need a visa to enter Norway to see which category applies to you.
2. Student status
Please go to the page that is relevant to your student status and visa requirement:
Bilateral/Erasmus+ exchange student who does NOT need an entry visa
- You do NOT need to transfer money to a Norwegian bank account in order to document financing.
- You might be asked to present other means of documentation;
- documentation of student loan or scholarship
- bank statement from your home country
- Please check if your Study Plan letter (attached to your Admission letter) provides a confirmation from UiO that you have sufficient financial means to cover your period of studies in Norway. If yes, you do not need to make a transfer of funds to SiO Residence Permit Deposit Account.
Bilateral exchange student who needs an entry visa
- You must make a transfer of funds to SiO Residence Permit Deposit Account in order to document financing.

Erasmus+ exchange student who needs an entry visa
Please check if your Study Plan letter (attached to your Admission letter) provides a confirmation from UiO that you have sufficient financial means to cover your period of studies in Norway. If yes, you do NOT need to make a transfer of funds to SiO Residence Permit Deposit Account.
- However, you might be asked to present other means of documentation;
- documentation of student loan or scholarship
- bank statement from your home country
If your study plan letter does not provide a confirmation of sufficient financial means, you will be asked to present other means of documentation;
- Documentation of Erasmus+ scholarship that will cover the living costs during your stay in Norway
- If you do not receive an Erasmus+ scholarship or a limited amount of scholarship, you should make a transfer of funds to SiO Residence Permit Deposit Account in order to document financing.

Student without a Bilateral/Erasmus+ exchange agreement
- If you are a non-EU/EEA citizen and guest student visiting UiO without a bilateral/Erasmus+ exchange agreement, you must make a transfer of funds to the SiO Residence Permit Deposit Account in order to document financing.
- This applies to all non-EU/EEA guest students, even if you do not need an entry visa to Norway.
