Cybersecurity for all – mandatory course for all faculty and staff at UiO

The University of Oslo (UiO) is launching a mandatory course on privacy and IT security. It is designed to provide you with the necessary skills to protect our valuable research data and personal information.

In the frontline

UiO's employees are in the frontline when it comes to protecting the university's information assets against daily and increasingly sophisticated attack attempts. Therefore, the university director has decided that all employees at UiO should have basic training in IT security and privacy.

The training is a short e-learning course. The course is tailored to provide you with important tools to protect our research data and personal information.??

Where is the course?

The course is already available in Canvas for all employees. You can also access the course from its own website.?

Learn to protect our valuable data

The IT department does a lot to secure servers, office machines, networks, and other infrastructure, but we cannot control what all IT users at UiO do.

Every year, the internal control survey shows that there is a need for – and a desire for – more training on security and privacy. The main goal of the mandatory course is to equip you with the most essential tools to handle personal data safely and legally, and to advise on how to protect our digital resources from malicious actors. Your efforts can make the difference between security and vulnerability.

Welcome to the Security Hour!

On Monday, December 8 from 11 am to 12 pm, there will be an event to launch the course, with an open gathering in auditorium 1 at Georg Sverdrup's house. All employees are invited to coffee, pastries, and security tips.

The IT director will welcome everyone, before IT legal senior advisor Vilde S?rb? Nenseth and UiO's IT security manager Espen Gr?ndahl take over. They will review the current threat landscape and provide real-world examples of how one can be deceived and what the consequences can be for you, your data, and for UiO.?

There will also be a short review of the course for those who wish to participate. After the event, there will be an opportunity to talk with key individuals from the IT department if you have anything on your mind regarding IT security, privacy, or anything related to the IT services at UiO.

Digital course

The course is designed as an e-learning course in Canvas and takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. The course requires no special prerequisites and is available in both Norwegian and English.

Now you will enhance your skills in IT security and privacy, and you will contribute to securing UiO's valuable resources against threats.

What does it mean that the course is mandatory?

All employees are encouraged to take the course as soon as possible. The deadline for completion is January 31, 2026. Completion will be automatically recorded, so once you have taken the course, you do not need to take any action regarding registration.

All new employees will receive a welcome email from the IT department starting January 1, 2026, with information that they must take the course. They will also receive this information during the onboarding process in their unit. Units will implement their own routines to follow up that employees complete the course. Course completion per unit will be reported to the university board annually in May.
