Editorial: Let¡¯s look after each other!

Dean Hanne Flinstad Harbo talks about what is happening at the Faculty. Discussions concerning the possible merger of the Faculty of Dentistry (OD) and the Faculty of Medicine (MED) will not be taken any further.

A strike is under way, it will soon be summer, and we are working to ensure that UiO is as safe as possible in every way. MED must be a good place to study and work for everyone.

Ukraine funding for four research projects

The faculty is allocating just under NOK 1.7 million to stimulate academic development and research on the consequences of the war in Ukraine. Thomas Clausen, Else Charlotte Sandset, Suraj Thapa and Frank Becker were all awarded funding for their projects.

The father of the Lipid Clinic turns 80

Professor emeritus Leiv Ose fought long and hard before his Norwegian colleagues eventually realised that there is a link between familial hypercholesterolemia and heart disease. Looking back on his career, he is most proud of the fact that he set up the Lipid Clinic 40 years ago.

Briefings

• UiO: Strike at UiO. Since Monday 27 May, 52 people at the University of Oslo (UiO) have been out on strike, following the breakdown of negotiations between Unio and the Norwegian State.

• UiO: The University Board has announced the winners of this year¡¯s UiO Research Award, Education Award, Dissemination Award, Innovation Award and Young Researcher Award. The awards will be presented at the Annual Celebration.
  Professor Emily Burger from Helsam has won the Young Researcher Award for her work to prevent cervical cancer caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). She has contributed considerable and widely recognised research into HPV vaccination and cervical screening. 

• UiO: ARK: Leaders thrive best at UiO in Norwegian

• UiO Growth House: Entrepreneurship in the health service: Apply for admission to the School of Health Innovation course 2 in autumn 2024. Deadline: 14 June. Bring your own project idea which you believe can be commercialised and use it as a basis for developing a business plan. The School of Health Innovation will cover all costs.

• MED: Arendalsuka 2024 will be held from 12 to 16 August: MED Faculty at Arendalsuka. Anything that interests you? Please join us! 

• UiO: This year¡¯s Summer Activity Day will take place on Thursday 13 June. Read more about this year's activities and registration here: Deadline 5 June 2024.

• UiO: Join Sykkelaksjonen. In addition to cycling to UiO, you can register all activity lasting at least 30 minutes. All employees can register their activity ¨C members of UiO¡¯s corporate sports team (UiOBIL) (sign up) are included in the draw for great prizes and in with a great chance of winning. 

• UiO: Read the report on the study of the possible merger between the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Medicine (in Norwegian). There will be no further developments concerning this possible merger.

• Helsam: A recently developed solution is set to give every GP in the country an overview of their antibiotic prescriptions. The twin aims are to ensure the more correct use of antibiotics and reduce the development of resistance. Read more in Dagens medisin.

• IMB: You can track the status of the construction works for the new University Hospital on IMB¡¯s web page for information from the Norwegian Hospital Construction Agency. 

• UiO: Discounts on theatre performances for UiO employees. Discounted tickets are currently available for three wonderful performances. Free tickets are available on a first come, first serve basis for the National Theatre's rehearsal of Garborg's "Haugtussa" on 14 June.

• Lederforum: Overview of meeting dates. The next meeting takes place on Tuesday 11 June. Agenda items and documents may be submitted until 12:00 on the last Thursday before the meeting. Here are the minutes from the previous meeting.
• Overview of faculty board meetings and IDF meetings in 2024 (PDF) with deadlines for submitting cases. The next faculty board meeting will be held on 18 June. Agendas and protocols will be updated here.

• June and autumn: External course. Course and workshops on writing and reading scientific articles ¨C in English or Norwegian, depending on participant preferences. 

• 3 June: Promotion seminar for female associate professors  (NB: deadline 31 May).
• 5 June: The Brain in the Centre: Art. The Faculty of Medicine invites you to attend the final session of the ¡°Brain in the Centre¡± series at the Auditorium. How does the brain process artistic stimuli? Experience the dissemination of research surrounded by Munch¡¯s paintings.
• 6 June: UiO Growth House invites you to: Impact Breakfast: Future food - rethinking food systems to sustain tomorrow's plate.
• 12-13 June: The Health Innovator School: Courses for professors and group leaders open for registration. Learn how you can increase innovation in your laboratory and build bridges across the gap between researchers and health innovators. Register to attend the course in Copenhagen on 12-13 June. All expenses will be covered. First come, first served.
• 18 - 20 August: Nordoc summer school vat the University of Helsinki. The Nordic PhD summer camp aims to bring together researchers from all health science fields under one roof. Come along and gain an insight into the experiences of your Nordic colleagues and present what you are working on too! Registration is open until 14 June 2024. See the preliminary programme here.

IMB: Surprising facts about organically grown cereals. According to an international meta-study, there may be smaller quantities of certain mycotoxins in organically grown cereals compared with cereals grown in the normal way. This and other findings from research on agricultural products could have major consequences.

Universitetsplassen: Is an artist¡¯s brain different from other people¡¯s brains The myth of ¡°artistic flair" or ¡°the artist¡¯s brain¡± is widespread. The tortured poet or the long-suffering artist. But, is there actually a difference between an artist¡¯s brain and a ¡°normal¡± brain? Come to Brain in the Centre on 5 June.
