Checklist at the start of semester

Remember that you don't have to use all of the functions available in Canvas right away. Start by making one or a couple of modules, and see which of the functionalities you are comfortable with.

1. Start by making one or a couple of modules. Or make a homepage.

Modules are used to organize different types of content (pages, files, quizzes, assignments, etc.) but they should not be used to duplicate content of the course semester page in Vortex. Best practice is to link to the course description and semester pages from Canvas.

Make sure to read University's policy on what should be placed in Canvas and what on the course page.

2. Remember to Publish

Always keep in mind that content, modules, and finally the whole course have to be Published in order to be available and visible to the students.

3. Adjust the course navigation menu

Remove all of the items in the course navigation menu that are unnecessary or not in use. To do this, go to Settings -> Navigation -> Drag and Drop.

Announcements can be used to communicate important messages to everyone enrolled in a course. All the announcements will also be imported to Mine 澳门葡京手机版app下载 and they will be visible on the Dashboard for all the students who are taking the course. Those who want to install the Canvas Student app, will also get a notification about all announcements there.

Check that the course menu has those items that you plan to use or that students need to access content. You can use Student View to check what is available to students in the course.

You can also change the course navigation menu later in the semester if necessary. Items in the course menu that are greyed out are not visible to the students, either because they are hidden in the Settings or because this functionality is not in use in the course.

4. Show the course to your students

It might be a good idea to spend some time early in the semester to show the course in Canvas to your students. Describe different parts of the course to your students and tell them how you will use Canvas in your course. Make sure that they understand what you expect from them in terms of participation in different activities. Students can read more about Canvas on the University of Oslo's web page Canvas for students.

Course description and semester pages

Course descriptions and semester pages are still in Vortex.

  • It is not mandatory that the course description contains information about Canvas.
  • Make sure that the semester page is up to date and the "Canvas button" is active. Read University's guide for the semester page (in Norwegian only).
