EU(Horizon2020, ERC, MSCA)
For all activities funded by the European Union, ethics is an integral part of research from beginning to end, and ethical compliance is seen as pivotal to achieve real research excellence. There is clear need to make a thorough ethical evaluation from the conceptual stage of the proposal not only to respect the legal framework but also to enhance the quality of the research.
- Before sending the application: The applicant complete an Ethical Self-assessment. Guide on how to complete one.
- When funded and before the project can start:
- The researcher is asked to do an Ethical Assessment, which is an extensive report based on the structure of the self-assessment. The project will be assigned an Ethics Officer(EO) that oversees, approves and evaluates the ethics of the entire project. Some projects also need an independent Ethics Consultant to approve periodic reports before sending it to the EO.
- Ethics approval: Sent to NSD. Some EO's doesn't consider an NSD approval as an assessment of the ethics of project, and might require an additional approval/evaluation/assessment/statement. This is conducted by field specific ethics committees. Overview of the different committees.
- During the project: Continuous reporting to the EO.
The Norwegian Research Council (NFR)
All projects funded by the Research Council are required to maintain high ethical standards. The responsibility for ensuring compliance with the applicable statutory framework and ethical guidelines lies with the institution/entity responsible for the project.
- Before sending the application: All applicants for Research Council funding must clarify any ethical issues related to the implementation of their projects and provide an explanation of how these will be dealt with. This will be given consideration in the grant application assessment.
- When funded: Projects with human subjects must be approved by either NSD or REK before the project starts.
- All projects funded by the NFR must have a Data Management Plan.
