Russia
In line with the sanctions and measures taken by the Norwegian government and the Norwegian Ministry of Education following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, all bilateral agreements between the University of Oslo and Russian research and educational institutions have been put on hold.
Research collaboration
The University of Oslo has collaboration in both research and education with Lomonosov Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University and Higher School of Economics. In addition, UiO has research collaboration with many other leading Russian universities. Traditionally, research cooperation between UiO and Russian institutions has been in the "hard sciences", particularly nuclear and particle physics. The Faculty of medicine has collaboration in research and education with Russian counterparts in three main areas: cardiology, cancer and stem cell research, and palliative care.
Research on Russian language, culture, society and contemporary politics is primarily carried out at the Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages at the Faculty of Humanities.
Arctic research and cooperation
The Arctic is one of UiO's interdisciplinary research areas, although research on the Arctic has been carried out since the latter part of the 19th century. UiO is a partner in the network Arctic Frontiers, and a member of the University of the Arctic (UArctic).
UiO has Arctic Research Cooperation with Russian partners in e.g. biosciences and geosciences. Example: "Changes at the Top of the World through Volcanism and Plate Tectonics: a Norwegian-Russian-North American Collaboration in Arctic Research and Education (NOR-R-AM2)", Department of Geosciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. This project comprises research and education and receives funding from the Norwegian INTPART Programme.
Collaboration in education and student exchange
UiO’s research cooperation with Russian institutions has also led to activities and cooperation within the field of education.
The Faculty of Humanities offers their students in Russian a full semester of language studies at the Petrozavodsk State University during their bachelor's degree.
The Department of Psychology at the Faculty of Social Sciences has an extended cooperation with Moscow State University Lomonosov. Students and staff at both institutions participate in an on-going mobility project funded by the Norwegian Cooperation Programme with Russia.
