Elements for videos

The University of Oslo has developed guidelines and templates for graphics, text and end screens in videos. Here are descriptions and examples of elements you may use and project files (templates) for download.

Main Rules for Video Design

The main principles of UiO's design profile should be applied to all video formats:

  • All elements such as titles and content markers should be right-aligned
  • Subtitles can be center-aligned, with a white background.
  • Use UiO's end screen with the seal.
  • Use UiO's colour palette.
  • Use UiO's typography.

Design Principles

Here we summarise the design principles that should also be followed when producing videos.

Colours

The University of Oslo's colour palette consists of a set of colours. A customised colour system with primary and secondary colours is used for videos.

  • The main colours for videos are black, white, and red (HEX: #DD0000)
  • You can use the entire colour palette in videos. Choose a colour that matches the theme of the video and harmonises with the visuals.
  • If you choose a primary colour, the corresponding secondary colour should be used as a supporting colour, for example, in text boxes. For instance, "light green" can be combined with "green tone", and "light blue" with "blue tone".

Examples of colour use in video

Fonts

Fonts used in videos should follow the typography outlined in the design manual. The main rules are:

  • Swiss 721
  • Arial

Regular is used for titles, introductions, and body text, while bold is used for subtitles. Italic is used to emphasise sentences or words.

Subtitles

All videos containing speech must have subtitles. Subtitles should be centre-aligned and span two lines. The text should always be black with a white background. The opacity should be one hundred percent.

  • Font: Helvetica - Regular
  • Font size: 50 pixels

It is important that the text is placed within a set grid so that it displays correctly in different viewing modes and on various devices.

Titles

Titles should always be left-aligned and preferably placed at the top left, below the content marker if used. This prevents conflicts with subtitles. First and last names should be in bold. The opacity should be one hundred percent.

  • Font: Helvetica - Regular
  • Font size: 50 pixels

Example of title placement in video

For narrow formats and long names, job titles and workplaces can be split into two lines using "at". Example: "Professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences".

Text Box

If you need to highlight content in your video with text, you can use a text box. The text box should always be left-aligned. It can be placed at the top left corner, below the content marker if used, or at the bottom left, depending on the film's layout. The opacity should be one hundred percent.

The font size should be adjusted according to the content and text volume but should always have a minimum size of 50 pixels.

Content label

Content labels can be used in video content to help users quickly understand the subject. The marking should be focused on a clear theme, category, or concept. Examples include "Studiestart", "Universitetsplassen", "Karriereuka" eller "Rektorvalg".

The content label should always be placed at the top left corner. The opacity should be one hundred percent.

Animation

Animation can be used for elements. The principles for all formats are:

  • Subtitles appear without animation.
  • Text boxes and content markers appear with a fade-in animation.
  • Titles appear with a slide-in animation.
  • All elements disappear without animation.

Campaigns

"Campaigns" refer to marketing activities running for a short period across multiple channels with a unified message and goal. These may include student recruitment or promoting major events. Campaign activities can have a distinct expression developed within the design manual's framework.

For recruitment campaigns, a dedicated template has been developed to ensure a uniform profile for the target group. This is regularly updated. The template is available in Adobe Express and Premiere.

End Screens for Video

All units must use the same end screen, displaying the university’s logo and seal.

A coloured end screen can also be used. If so, the background colour should follow the chosen primary colour from the palette. The logo should always be in white or black.
