Long History, Good Start and High Ambitions

It is our pleasure to introduce the first newsletter from dScience – Centre for Computational and Data Science. dScience is less than two years old, however the science behind the center has long and proud traditions at the University of Oslo.

The role of dScience is to

    1. further develop and build an internationally leading research community in computational and data science at the University of Oslo,
    2. deliver important digital contributions to the green transition of society and a sustainable future for all,
    3. be a frontrunner in developing and maintaining collaboration between academia, industry and the public sector, including being a key player in the development of Oslo Science City.

Dean, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science and Chairman of the Board, dScience

In order to fill this role, dScience is developing meeting places, both physical and digital, for researchers and partners. Various activities and events have been initiated and will be announced in this newsletter, on the dScience webpage and in other relevant channels.

Moreover, dScience provides programming services and facilitates digital resources into research projects. dScience is doing this in close collaboration with USIT. A prominent example is that dScience will be heavily involved in the hosting of The Norwegian AI Cloud – a national infrastructure funded by the Research Council of Norway from 2023.

Finally, dScience initiates and supports the development of research projects, preferably large projects, across departments and faculties at UiO. Many of these projects are together with external partners, both nationally and internationally. dScience is currently working on large EU-projects and we have started the work towards the next call to become a Centre for Research-Driven Innovation supported by the Research Council.

This said, we have not forgotten that UiO a few days ago was awarded five out of nine new Centers of Excellence (CoE) in Norway. One of these CoEs – The Norwegian Centre for Knowledge-Driven Machine Learning (Integreat) – is at the core of what dScience will do in the coming years. The granting of Integreat to UiO represents a tremendous boost for dScience. We are facing exciting times.

A lot has happened since dScience was launched in January 2021 and a lot will happen in the coming years, so sign up for this newsletter and receive exciting news from dScience and related activities.
