Data Science Day commenced with a social gathering and refreshments, setting the stage for an evening of intellectual engagement and networking. The event was officially opened by Professor Morten D?hlen, head of dScience, and Professor Arnoldo Frigessi, Director for Integreat.
The evening's toastmasters, Tobias Verheugen Hvidsten and Alouette van Hove, efficiently guided the event and introduced the talks.
Three captivating talks
The evening's highlights included three captivating talks presented by speakers from University of Oslo, Analyse & Tall and Spoor, each demonstrating the influence of data science on various societal aspects.
“Learning without Seeing – Catching the Evolution of Bacteria through the Statistical Looking-Glass”: Professor Jukka Corander from the University of Oslo delved into the realm of statistical analysis to explore the evolution of bacteria, showcasing the remarkable potential of data science in biological research.
“Mapping the Public Debate on Facebook – From Chaos to Insight”: Ane Kathrine Strand and Aylin Dursun from Analyse & Tall unveiled how data science can be a powerful tool for dissecting and understanding the complexities of public discourse on social media.
“AI Ornithologist: Expectation vs Reality”: Arnoud Jonker and Raaisa Raaisa from Spoor shared their insights into the fascinating world of AI ornithology (the science of studying birds), shedding light on the real-world applications and challenges in this domain.
Valuable networking
Following the enlightening talks, attendees reconvened in the Science Library foyer for more mingling and an assortment of refreshments, fostering connections and discussions that continued to enrich the evening.

One of the event's hallmarks was the presence of prominent companies and organisations from the data science landscape, each hosting stands to introduce themselves and their work. These companies and organisations included ABB, Arundo Analytics, Bane NOR, Chronos, Computas, DNB, DNV, Eika Forsikring, Equinor, Gjensidige, IndyKite, Kartverket, Kongsberg Digital, Norsk Regnesentral, PGS, Politiets IT-enhet, Schibsted, SINTEF Digital, SLB, Statistisk sentralbyr?, and Wilhelmsen. This initiative aimed to unite all segments of the data science community, creating unique networking opportunities.
