Norbert Pirk is a Researcher at the Department of Geosciences in the Section of Physical Geography and Hydrology. His research focuses on measuring land-atmosphere interactions in arctic and alpine environment.
About the talk
A central challenge in climate modeling is the accurate representation of the land-atmosphere exchange of energy, water, and greenhouse gases. At the Department of Geosciences, we develop an inverse modeling framework to enable the mapping of these fluxes using drone sensor data together with computational fluid dynamics modeling. This approach solves a number of long-standing issues with surface flux estimations, but could be significantly improved by adding swarm intelligence to position our network on our drones. Within the dScience Center, we work to optimize the sequential feedback between the position of the drone swarm and the estimated surface flux maps using reinforcement learning. This talk will discuss the key innovations that are required for this approach and the potential impact on geosciences and climate modeling.
Program
11:45 – Doors open and lunch is served
12:15 – "Swarm intelligence for observing systems in climate science – developing a reinforcement learning framework for surface flux mapping with drones“ by Norbert Pirk (Researcher, Section of Physical Geography and Hydrology, UiO)
13:00 – Mingling (and goodbye)
To participate, please fill out the registration form by January 26. This way, we will not be short on food and drinks! (Registration is not binding and you are welcome to join us anyway!)

About the seminar series
Once a month, dScience will invite you to join us for lunch, soft drinks and professional talks at the Science Library. In addition to these, we will serve lunch to PhD candidates in our lounge in Kristine Bonnevies hus every Thursday. Due to limited space (40 people), this will be first come, first served. See how to find us here (download).
Our lounge can also be booked by PhDs and Postdocs on a regular basis, whether it is for a meeting or just to hang out – we have fresh coffee all day long! Read more about the series and the upcoming program here.
