Thordis Thorarinsdottir is a statistician and chief research scientist at the Norwegian Computing Center (Norsk Regnesentral) where she is a research leader for climate and environment. She is also a co-leader of Climate Futures, a center for research-based innovation. In her research, she develops stochastic models and methods for the environmental sciences, with a special emphasis on uncertainty quantification.
Understanding, assessing, mitigating and adapting to climate change requires substantial and imaginative interdisciplinary efforts. In this talk, we will discuss some contributions that statistics and machine learning provide to the assessment of climate change and climate risk. We will, in particular, focus on the predictability of weather and climate, recent efforts to push the limits of climate prediction, the importance of uncertainty quantification and model evaluation.
Program
11:45 – Doors open and lunch is served
12:15 – "On the importance of statistics and machine learning in climate research" by Thordis Thorarinsdottir, Chief Research Scientist at the Norwegian Computing Center
13:00 – Mingling (and goodbye)
To participate, please fill out the registration form by March 1. This way, we will not be short on food and drinks! (Registration is not binding and you are welcome to join us anyway!)
About the seminar series
Once a month, dScience will invite you to join us for lunch, soft drinks and professional talks at the Science Library. In addition to these, we will serve lunch to PhD candidates in our lounge in Kristine Bonnevies hus every Thursday. Due to limited space (40 people), this will be first come, first served. See how to find us here (download).
Our lounge can also be booked by PhDs and Postdocs on a regular basis, whether it is for a meeting or just to hang out – we have fresh coffee all day long! Read more about the series and the upcoming program here.
