SNE4230 – Research Methodology
Course content
This course is a component in the second and third semesters of the two-year Master’s Programme in Special Needs Education.
- Theory of science; research problems and strategies in special needs education
- Qualitative and quantitative research designs, methods, instruments, data analysis and presentation
- Research ethics
- Principles and techniques of statistical analysis
- Conceptualising and conducting a research proposal
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
The course aims to give students a broad understanding of research methodology, including theory of science and qualitative and quantitative methods.
Skills:
The course aims to give students skills for critical reading of research literature and for developing a research proposal for a master’s thesis project.
Competence:
Students should become competent in planning, conducting, evaluating and presenting a research project.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
The course is an obligatory component of the Master of Philosophy in Special Needs Education Programme. Only students formally accepted onto the programme may attend this course.

- A series of research planning seminars
- Literature studies
- Group and plenary discussions
Compulsory activities
- The research planning seminars
Examination
- Individual written examination in statistical principles and analysis (3 hours) during the second semester. Grades: Pass/Fail (A re-sit examination may be taken at the end of the second semester if "Fail")
- Development of a research proposal during the second semester. The research proposal may be written individually or in cooperation between two students. The latter will be the case if two students are planning to do the research and write their master’s thesis together Grades: Pass/Fail
- Individual written examination in theory of science and research methodology (4 hours) at the beginning of the fourth semester Grades: A, B, C, D, E and F(ail)
The final grade for SNE4230 is awarded on the basis of the grade given for "Individual written examination in theory of science and research methodology".
