PED2420 – Comparative and International Education

Course content
The course includes an introduction to the field of comparative and international education.
Furthermore, the course consists of an introduction to the following areas: education and development; globalisation and education through a discussion of the issue quality, equity and relevance in education.
Finally, a comparative analysis between Norway and another countries educational system, with a focus on a specific area, will be dealt with.
Learning outcome
After completion of the course the students should
- be able to discuss selected aspects of the educational system of a country outside Norway.
- be able to explain different aspects of comparative studies regarding possibilities and limitations for educational policy decisions.
- show that they understand the importance of comparative studies for understanding change and development of specific aspects of the Norwegian educational system.
Admission
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

You cannot follow and complete the requirements in this subject unless you have applied and been offered a place in the course.
Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
It is recommended that students have at least 30 ECTS points within education or social sciences.
Overlapping courses
The course overlaps 100% with PED1420
Teaching
The course is taught in seminars which will consist of both lectures and student activity.
Diversed working and learning methods will be used. Students will be based in groups for a group project which is an integrated part of the course.
Active participation in the course is required in both seminars and group activities.
Students will be offered academic supervision for course requirements.
It is compulsory to attend the first lecture/seminar. Students that do not attend will loose access to the course. Students that are ill or otherwise prevented from attending must contact the study administration of the course (See contact information on the semester page).
Access to teaching
A student who wants to retake the course must apply in the normal way within the regular deadlines of UiO.
Examination
Requirements
Compulsory activity during the course:
The groups must give an oral presentation on the group project (case). See information below on compulsory paper 1.
Compulsory papers
1. A group assignment of 5 pages based on the course literature or a specific provided topic.The groups will receive their cases from the course teacher.
The paper accounts for 50% of the course grade.
2. An individual written assignment of 5 pages dealing with a self-selected central topic chosen from the course syllabus.
The paper accounts for 50% of the course grade.
The deadline for the course requirements will be announced at the start of the semester.
All obligatory work is to be completed in the same term.
Exam
All the course requirements are to be handed in within the given deadline. The compuslory group presentation must be approved before the papers may be submitted.

Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English.You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
The compulsory papers 1 and 2 each count for 50% of the grade.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
All obligatory work is to be completed in the same semester. If a student wishes to retake the exam, he/she must apply to follow the course seminars and complete all requirements in the same semester when the course is next offered.
Spring Semester 2019 is the last chance to complete compulstory presentationt and paper number 1 (Group paper) . You may complete (or retake) the exam by handing in the compulsory paper number 2 (individual paper) in the spring of 2020 if you have allready completed and passed the presentation and the group paper in an earlier semester.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
