Course content

In support of the preparation of the thesis, a special course is designed on a number of targeted issues in Comparative and International Education that spring from the choice by students' topics for their thesis.

The teaching will be based on the research proposals developed by the students in the spring semester. It aims at strengthening theoretical and methodological approaches as well as understanding of substance issues.

The course will include highlighting existing research on the topics of the students choice, how to conduct literature reviews, how to develop analytical frameworks and how to develop research instruments.

The specific outcomes of the course will be the research instruments to be applied by the students in their field work.

The teaching will be run as a seminar series in which supervisors and others will be invited to present their own research and where students will be presenting their own planned work.

Learning outcome

The course aims at enhancing the students’ capacity to undertake independent research in view of existing knowledge and relevant analytical frameworks and research methods. This includes the specific design of research instruments.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Students are required to have passed all previous courses in the programme.

Teaching

The course combines lectures with oral presentations by students.

A minimum of 80 percent attendance is required of all students. If students do not fulfill the mandatory attendance requirements, they must submit a written request to apply for an additional assignment prior to passing the course. The application must document stated reasons for absence beyond the student’s control.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

Students are required to develop the research instruments that are to be applied in the ensuing field work.

The research instruments will be judged Pass/Fail by the teachers involved in the course. Final decision on the student’s preparedness to undertake the field work rests with the supervisor. The assignment will count as the entire portion of the grade.

Students who fail will have the possibility to redo the instruments.

Use of sources and citation

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
