REDI4001 – Religion and Migration

Course content

The course will not be taught spring 2024.

Migration is a major topic of our time. Millions of people are passing borders, many of them as refugees, others for other reasons, causes and future prospects. In this course we specifically focus on how migration and migration practices impact and reformat religion. Migration challenges everyday practices and religion, regardless of the political climates of Europe. One central topic is connected to how, and in what ways these practices are connected to contemporary academic discussions on citizenship.

The aim of this course is to expand significant perspectives on the practice and the interpretations of religious and migration contexts. The approach in the course is to discover, analyse and interpret ongoing projects and practices from religion and beyond involved in migrant and refugee contexts. From covering basic needs to community building projects. Who shapes these practices? And how do these practices impact religion? What can one learn from these practices, on research encounters and dialogues on the topics of hospitality and contemporary citizenship?

Learning outcome

The students will gain:

  • Insights in migrant practices and migration contexts and advocacy.
  • The ability to identify and interpret how migration formats religion.
  • Knowledge on interpretations of contemporary citizenship theorisations in religion and migration contexts.
  • Competence in identifying and interpreting hospitalities and binaries, such as the host/guest and the victim/agent binary.
  • Insights on how migration may be analysed from the perspectives of religion and citizenship.
