CONT4402 – Interreligious Relations

Course content
The course will combine general studies of theological attitudes to other religions with case studies of Christian relationships with specific religious traditions. The first part will include a broad review of various theologies of religion, with emphasis on trends in contemporary Roman Catholic and Protestant theology. The second part will deal with the relationship between Christianity and one or two of the following four religious traditions: Islam, Buddhism, New Religious Movements, or Primal traditional religions.
Learning outcome
Knowledge of representative trends in theology concerning the relationship between the Christian claim of universality and the truth claims of other religions. Ability to deal critically with the challenges and insights resulting from the actual dialogue with particular religious traditions in contexts of religious pluralism.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Bachelor degree in either theology, Christian education, religion with Christian theology as a major part, or equivalent.
Recommended previous knowledge
The course presupposes introductory knowledge of systematic theology and religious studies. The language of the compulsory reading list is normally English.
Teaching
The course will run through the semester, with some teaching periods and some study periods. The teaching will be regular lectures, with some seminar sessions. Active participation will be required, and two written report on selected issues (2-3 pages) will be required.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
